RESEARCH: State of the Coalfields report released

A new independent report, led by Steve Fothergill and the University’s Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research, has found that former coalfield communities remain scarred by the past. The report has been highlighted by BBC Radio 4 (01:08) and Look North (clip available on request).

The report was also covered by the BBC, ITV and Daily Express (PDF on request), followed by further coverage from the Mansfield Chad, The Big Issue and the Wakefield Express.

ENVIRONMENT: Invasive species have a role to play in our cities

Ian Rotherham, a specialist in invasion biology and environmental history at Sheffield Hallam, has been speaking to CityLab about how emotive terms such as “invasive” can misrepresent the way that species, such as the monk parakeet (pictured), flourish in city spaces.
