Are Teachers in Sheffield Ready to Talk About Sex?

Around 50 delegates attended a Sheffield Institute of Policy Studies Workshop on Wednesday 10th July which presented research from MRes students Tracey Holland, Becca White and Chloe Froggatt and their project supervisors Professor Julia Hirst and Dr Cinnamon Bennett on the readiness of teachers in Sheffield to teach to the revised curriculum for Relationships and Sex Education which comes into force UK wide by September 2020 (and in some areas by September 2019). For the first time, the curriculum will cover sexual identity and same-sex relationships. The research found that 83% of the teachers surveyed had never received any formalised training to teach sex and relationships education.
