Social Policy Association award for excellence in scholarship

Professor Paul Hickman, Professor of Housing and Social Policy, was as an award winner at the 2019 annual conference of the Social Policy Association (SPA), which took place at Durham in July.  He won the Cambridge University Press Award for excellence in Social Policy Scholarship 2019 (Journal of Social Policy and Society) for his article: ‘A Flawed Construct? Understanding and Unpicking the Concept of Resilience in the Context of Economic Hardship’. The judging panel for the Awards consisted of Baroness Ruth Lister of Burtersett (as President of the SPA), Professor Alan Deacon, Professor Caroline Glendinning and Dr Margaret May (as judges appointed by the SPA), and Josephine Tucker from the Child Poverty Action Group (as judge from outside the academic community)


Public Health England contract

Professor Maddy Arden and Dr Rachael Thorneloe recently won a contract with Public Health England (£25,000) to explore barriers and facilitators to healthcare professionals giving brief physical activity advice in primary care, and to explore tools and solutions developed to help support the delivery of physical activity advice.


Environmental Agency contract

Dr Rachael Thorneloe was awarded a contract with the Environmental Agency to peer review a commissioned report which assessed the barriers and facilitators to people changing their homes to be more flood resilient (£1,725).


British HIV Association funding 

Dr Martin Lamb and Dr Hilary Piercy (HWB) recently won a funding from BHIVA (British HIV Association) to explore the role of healthcare professionals in promoting physical activity to people living with HIV (£6975). This is work has developed of the back of the CKIP funding which this research team won at the end of 2018.
