Primary PE and Sport Premium

Over the past 6 months Sarah Williams, course leader for the PGCE Primary PE Specialist programme, has been working as part of a Westminster All Party Parliamentary group for a ‘Fit and Healthy Childhood’.

Soon after Sarah joined the group they commissioned a report on the impact of the Primary PE and Sport Premium. The Premium provides schools in England with approximately £9k annually to develop high quality PE and sport. Over the past 6 years schools have benefitted from 1.6 billion pounds of funding however this is due to come to an end in 2020. Initial investment was part of the 2012 Olympic legacy programme and since that time funding has gradually increased with the creation of the sugar tax.

The APPG group called for support to fund this report and David Owen generously offered to sponsor the report along with Kingston and Winchester University. As part of Sheffield Hallam University’s contribution to this report, Sarah has been working as a lead author with colleagues from Winchester and Kingston, and has helped to pull together contributions from a wide range of sector representatives.

In the report, the group have navigated the complexities of the relationship between PE, Sport and physical activity. The report has had contributions from an unusually large number of academics and the group are confident that the recommendations within the report are balanced and evidence based.

You can download a copy of the report here and learn more about the important work that Sarah has been contributing to.
