Gleadless: Brexit on the Valley

On Friday 22 March 2019, a group of students and academics from the Politics department took to the streets of Gleadless Valley in Sheffield to talk to residents about their views on Brexit. They joined forces with staff and students from the University of Sheffield for the politics roadshow. The Brexit on the Valley event, which took place in a church hall and later a pub, was held to encourage discussion and interaction about politics between local residents and representatives from the two universities. Knut Roder, Senior Lecturer in politics  said: “The event went really well, was fun and provided a steep learning curve. Our students are really switched on and have already lined up their next outreach event at a local school.”

MA in International Relations and Global Crisies

The MA in International Relations and Global Crisies launch takes place Thursday 4 April 2019 with Dr Katherine Wright from Newcastle University delivering a guest lecture at 4 pm at Heart of the Campus, room 0.29. Wine reception from 5.30pm.

 

Social Isolation Cine Science

Dr Antonia Ypsilanti was invited as a panel expert to Social Isolation Cine Science at the Crucible, a public engagement event hosted by the British Science Association, Sheffield Branch. The event involved the screening of a film about loneliness and social isolation and was followed by a discussion with a panel of experts on the topic. Dr Ypsilanti discussed here research on loneliness and how can psychological interventions alleviate the physical and mental health burden of loneliness in young people, older individuals and socially disadvantaged groups.

Professor Maddy Arden

Prof Maddy Arden has been invited to sit on the Public Health England Behavioural Science Advisory Group: PHE BSAG which held its inaugural meeting on Monday 11th March at Wellington House, London.  The group has been formed to guide PHE’s behavioural science activity with the aim of embedding behavioural science in policy, advice and practice at national and local levels. The group includes academics from a number of Universities (Cambridge, Kings College, UCL, Sussex, Manchester), the Behavioural Insights Team, PHE, and Behavioural Science and Public Health Network (BSPHN).

She has also been invited to sit on the Public Health Research Hub for Yorkshire and the Humber. This group includes academics working in public health from across the region from a number of Universities (University of Sheffield, Leeds Beckett University, Bradford Institute for Health Research.

Prof Maddy Arden presented at the Yorkshire and Humber Public Health Network Behavioural Science Symposium in Leeds on 6th March 2019 which focused on the new Public Health England strategy Improving people’s health: Applying behavioural and social sciences. She presented on an overall approach to the development and evaluation of interventions using behavioural science, and on work currently being undertaken with Doncaster Council on physical activity in disadvantaged communities.  Further details and copies of the slides are available here: https://www.yhphnetwork.co.uk/links-and-resources/behavioural-science/

Professor Ann Macaskill

Prof Ann Macaskill has been invited by Research England to be a member of the PGR  Mental Health and Wellbeing Catalyst programme Evaluation Advisory Group.

International Investigative Interviewing Research Group

The Forensic and Investigative Research (FAIR) team in SHU (Drs Marilena Kyriakidou, Charlotte Coleman, and Jennifer Drabble from PSP) has embarked a new project that was funded by the International Investigative Interviewing Research Group (iIIRG). The project will to develop a short educational video for police interviewers and interpreters regarding their collaboration when interviewing children. Collaborating partners the Netherlands Police Academy, Cyprus Police, the Association of Police and Court Interpreters in the UK, and the UK’s Society of Official Metropolitan Interpreters.
