Welcome to the latest newsletter
Just like the weather, our events calendar is also starting to warm up as we head towards the summer months and we’ll be telling you all about what’s coming up and how you can get involved.
We also have two (yes, two!) new blog posts for you to read, one about the recent Dying Matters week which took place earlier in May, and another about the upcoming Carers Week which is 10th – 16th June.
Then in July we are hosting a joint event with the University of Sheffield which focuses on how to balance an academic career and parental or caring responsibilities (there’s even a free lunch!)…we hope to see you there!

Dying matters
Dying Matters Week is an annual event which aims to encourage people to tackle one of life’s great taboos and to enable us to feel more comfortable talking about death and dying.
These conversations can be massively beneficial to us and to our loved ones, and this blog post provides links to some resources to help you get started.
Carers week
One of the main aims of our network is to reach out to more carers, and it’s a real challenge as the act of caring is such a hidden practice, plus there are so many people out there who classify as carers without even knowing it!
This Carers Week we want to help people come to terms with, and understand their role as a carer.
Plus, find out how you can help Sheffield Young Carers break a world record!
Joint SHU and UoS event: ‘Professor or parent? Lecturer or carer? How to balance an academic career with parenting and caring’
Join staff from Sheffield Hallam and University of Sheffield for a lunchtime event exploring how to balance a career in academia with parenting or caring responsibilities.
An academic career can bring unique challenges when it comes to balancing work and family life. Hear from our panel of academic staff about how they make the balance work for them and how they have been able to lead successful academic careers whilst being an active parent or committed carer.
The event will take place on Tuesday 9th July at City Campus between 12:00 and 1:30pm. Lunch will be provided.
Spaces are limited so if you would like to reserve a space early please email us.
Buddy scheme- pilot update
As you know we launched the pilot of our buddy scheme earlier this month, so far we have around 28 network members in our pool of buddies and we’ve been absolutely thrilled to see buddy requests being sent out and people agreeing to meet up and share their experiences.
In the next few months we’ll be seeking some feedback from those who have participated to see how they found it and to see where we can make improvements before doing a full launch of the scheme.
