Staff Changes

SSH has gone through some significant changes which has seen an influx of new professional services staff to the faculty. Welcome to all who have joined us, we hope everyone is settling into their new roles and enjoying getting to know each other.

New team structures are currently being collated and will be included in the next SSH news bulletin for you to see who has joined the faculty and what role they are doing.

We also welcome Yvonne Battle-Felton, a lecturer in Creative Writing , Creative Industries and Humanities and Nicola Ingram who has joined as Professor in Education Childhood and Inclusion


Congratulations

Jacqueline Stevenson, Head of Research at SIoE was awarded an MBE for her work on widening access to higher education. See more here about the outstanding work she has been doing.

We would like to congratulate Nichola Cadet in becoming a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Our congratulations also go to Dr Aimee Ambrose in becoming a Reader in Energy Policy at The Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research and  Jon Dean, Senior Lecturer in Politics, Dr Will Eadson, Senior Research Fellow, and Ruth Barley, Senior Lecturer in Social Sciences, in all becoming Readers.

SIPS News

The Sheffield Institute of Policy Studies hosted a seminar on ‘Engaging with ‘Community’: Issues about identity, research and access’ on 23 January 2019

SIPS are running a Doctoral Poster competition which is now open for applications until 13 February 2019.

CRESR News

Dr Aimee Ambrose has successfully secured funding from the prestigious White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership for a Collaborative Studentship on overcoming energy invisibility through research participation. The studentship will be delivered in partnership with the International Energy Agency and the University of Lund, Sweden and a student will be appointed in 2019.

SIoE News

Sam Twiselton, Director of SIoE has written a piece for Tes about the impact the new teacher recruitment and retention strategy will have on the teaching profession and on the recruitment process for teachers here.

Also talking about tackling the teacher recruitment crisis, Sue O’Brien, Partnerships for Attainment lead, South Yorkshire Futures, has written the latest SIoE blog post here

Mark Heaton, Principal Lecturer in SIoE wrote a piece on how to tackle pupil loneliness for TES .

SHU Wellness

SHU Wellness have now released their next timetable for their wellness programme of events.

Parent and Carers Network

The Sheffield Hallam University’s Parent and Carers Network have released their first blog post for 2019. Read the piece by Ros Porter, a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics, who reflects on a workshop she attended:‘Who cares? The (in)visibility of caring responsibilities and working in Geography’


Process Updates

Marketing Tool Kit

The marketing team have released a new tool kit as a resource for academic staff members, teams, departments and faculties to use as support with producing marketing materials.

Technical Services

The Faculty operates an annual process for requesting investment in specialist equipment to support teaching, research and operations. The request form and guidance regarding the process can be found here. Please note, the deadline for all requests is midday Thursday 21 February 2019.


Estates News

Some structural surveys will be carried out in the Science Park building on Thursday 7 February 2019 in preparation for the demolition of the building. Please see here for further information.

Academic Professional Development Programme

This is a programme of CPD events for academics running in February and March which includes workshops on referencing, managing student behaviour in taught sessions, dealing with the stress of assessments and making the message count- using your body and voice to teach more effectively. You can find out more and book your place on a workshop here.

The Hallam Guild

The Hallam Guild is a cross-university community of staff and students with shared goals and common interests, working together to develop a culture of educational excellence in the University, by building expertise and sharing best practice.They have a whole calendar of events scheduled running up until the end of March.


Faculty Communications

The faculty now has dedicated support with communications and staff engagement. Danielle Allen is the Faculty Operations Manager who will be working closely with Fran Quinlivan-Hunt, the Internal Communications Coordinator for SSH.
