Exploring the Geographies of New York

In March, thirty-seven Level 5 students travelled to New York to explore a range of critical urban geographies across Lower Manhattan. Led by Keith McKoy, Richard White, Angela Maye-Banbury, Jane Petrie and Tony Manzi, the students paid particular attention to oral histories, sound geographies, public housing in the city and (resistance to) gentrification. With a strong emphasis on co-learning, and the use of small-group exercises to help foster an active and collaborative research environment, this inaugural Human Geography fieldtrip to NYC proved to be a great success!

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust

The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust commissioned Sheffield Hallam to interpret available biodiversity data and other evidence to highlight the differences between protected and non-protected landscapes. Lynn Crowe and John Rose, with the help with one of their students Ryan Lloyd, examined the conditions of some our most highly valued wildlife sites in national parks in England. You can read about their findings from their research here.
