Interior Architecture course wins national recognition at Interior Educators show

With humans in the western world spending up 90% of their time indoors and the increased need to reuse existing buildings the role of Interior Architecture is becoming more important for our wellbeing and the sustainability of our cities.

Sheffield Hallam Interior Architecture and Design is one of the key courses in the country that is helping to change attitudes toward the profession; recently winning Best Course Exhibition and Best 2D Representation by student Ilkay Tek at this year’s Free Range Show run by Interior Educators. The course changed from Interior Design to Interior Architecture in 2018 to focus more on an in-depth understanding of existing buildings and producing more rigorous and sustainable propositions.

The course is built around developing an understanding of people, place and culture, these are then used to develop a unique design narrative. Projects embrace an individual approach to culture and exchange in response to the ever-increasing obsession with ‘Brexit’. Students have the opportunity to reflect upon and explore their own cultural narrative against the backdrop of a turbulent political and economic climate, in which language and culture has expanded through ‘free’ movement of people.

It has been a year of cultural diversity with students exploring themes in response to theories around culture, trade and identity. From these students have produced engaging projects around health care, social housing, heritage and the ageing population.
