Helena Kennedy Centre (HKC) Law Clinic

Free Legal Advice at Heart of the Campus

Do you need assistance with a legal matter? HKC Law Clinic will be taking on new clients from the start of October 2019.

The award-winning Sheffield Hallam University Law Clinic has been providing free legal advice to staff, students and members of the public for almost 30 years. We work out of the Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice (“HKC”) in the Heart of the Campus building on Collegiate Campus.

The clinic is staffed by final year law students, supervised by qualified legal professionals with years of experience in legal practice.

What can we do?

We provide a full service to our clients – undertaking interviews, fully researching their matters and providing detailed written advice to help them with their legal issues.

Over the years, students have helped clients with matters including consumer disputes; tenancy disputes; small business issues; holiday issues; advice on setting up companies; small claims cases and some trust and probate and family law issues.

HKC Law Clinic provides a highly professional service, and all advice and assistance is given in the strictest confidence.

What can’t we do?

Unfortunately, we are currently unable to advise on criminal law matters, employment law cases, immigration issues or debt matters.

All advice that we provided will be in writing only.

We are unable to accept instructions from any person who wishes to pursue a claim against a university or Sheffield Hallam University, its governors, employees or students.

We may be unable to assist with particularly urgent queries or with queries where there is the possibility of a conflict of interest arising.

Do you require legal assistance…?

If you need legal advice on any of the areas that we cover (or you know anyone who does, whether or not they are staff or students at SHU), please do not hesitate to contact the Law Clinic on law-clinic@shu.ac.uk or by telephone to 0114 225 2504 for a new client enquiry form.
