Geneva: Helena Kennedy Centre Working Group on Trafficking in Women and Girls Intervenes at the United Nations

On Friday 22 February 2019, at a half-day of general discussion held by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) at the United Nations in Geneva, Dr Thomas Bundschuh, Department of Law and Criminology, delivered an oral statement on behalf of the Helena Kennedy Centre (HKC) Working Group on trafficking in women and girls in the context of global migration. This statement summarised the Working Group’s earlier written submission to the CEDAW. Relevant links are provided for your interest: Video of oral statement; Oral statement; Written submission.

The HKC Working Group on trafficking in women and girls in the context of global migration was established by the HKC’s Applied Human Rights Cluster as a collaboration between staff to contribute to the forthcoming General Recommendation of the CEDAW on trafficking in women and girls in the context of global migration. A General Recommendation is an authoritative statement of the CEDAW that States parties and the Committee use to achieve more effective human rights implementation. The process is therefore expected to contribute significantly to the global elimination of human trafficking.

Later this year, Dr Thomas Bundschuh and Matt Sands, Co-Chairs of the Applied Human Rights Cluster, will introduce SHU students to the work of Geneva-based UN human rights institutions, such as the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This will be combined with visits to local human rights NGOs collaborating with the UN in Geneva. The United Nations Geneva Human Rights Tour will provide students with a unique opportunity to gain insight and understanding of international human rights in practice.
