Black History Month

‘Making the Invisible, Visible’

Black History Month highlights and celebrates the history and achievements of the Black community. Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union is hosting a series of events and student-led initiatives to empower students of colour, with discussions on existing structural barriers in society and how we can work on breaking them down. These events are open for both staff and students to attend.

 

One of the featured events is a the film screening of HERO: the story of Ulric Cross, who in 1941, left his small island home in Trinidad to seek his fortune, and became the RAF’s most decorated West Indian airman of WWII. His life took a dramatically different course when he followed the call of history and joined the independence movements sweeping Africa in the ‘50s and ‘60s.


Identifying and supporting STEM for young children

Hallam’s 0-5 Education team and South Yorkshire Future’s Early Years Strand are hosting a CPD network event on Wednesday 2 October from 4-6 pm in the Dorothy Fleming Lecture Theatre, called Identifying and Supporting STEM for 0-5’s. Niki Buchan, an award winning author and Educational Consultant from the Natural Learning Early Childhood Consultancy will explain ‘how to develop the skills and understanding to support and encourage a deeper level of STEM exploration and discovery’. Off the Shelf

The 2019 Off the Shelf festival kicks off on 5 October with this years theme being the ‘Environment’.

Guests include Zadie Smith, David Baddiel, Katy Brand, David Suchet, Toria Garbutt, Jack Monroe, George Alagiah, Henry Blofeld, Mark Radcliffe and Otis Mensah – the current Sheffield poet laureate

Ireland and the UK in Brexit World

As part of the Politics & Sociology Seminar Series, and to celebrate the beginning of the academic year and the launch of our new MA International Relations and Global Crisis, you are cordially invited to the following seminar: ‘Ireland and the UK in Brexit World’

Michael Holmes is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Liverpool Hope University, and Director of the Lille-Liverpool European Institute, which aims to encourage collaboration between universities and promote research in European affairs. His most recent book is The European Left and the Financial Crisis (ed. with Knut Roder), published by Manchester University Press.

There is no need to book your attendance, and the talk will be followed by a drinks reception for all.


Creative writing masterclass series

The Masterclass Series exists to supplement Masters and Undergraduate students of Creative Writing with talks and readings from excellent writers, agents, publishers and others with knowledge of the world of writing.

Any interested member of the university or public is welcome to attend.

October Transforming Lives Session

The first transforming lives session for this academic year is on 23 October and is focused on a strategy update.

Cathy Sinclair and Carol Castle (Director of Student Recruitment & Admissions)  will provide a review of the 2018/19 recruitment cycle, including our final position, and looking forward to priorities, challenges and opportunities for 2019/20 and beyond, and Natalie Day (Head of Strategy and Policy Insight) & Elizabeth Morgan (Planning Analyst) will be discussing the Access and Participation Plan.

Research data management 

Library Research Support will be running introductory research data management sessions on 28 October at 10 am, 4 November at 2 pm and  6 November at 4 pm, all in Adsetts Library Room 6624.

Festival of Social Sciences

This years Festival of Social Sciences, a series of events examining the ideas that shape our everyday lives organised between Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield, runs from Saturday 2- Saturday 9 November 2019.
