Albie Sachs Honorary Doctorate

South African anti-apartheid lawyer, Albie Sachs was presented with an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in recognition of his outstanding achievements in human rights activism. The honour was bestowed on him by international human rights lawyer and University Chancellor Baroness Helena Kennedy QC. Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Chris Husbands attended the event, alongside other dignitaries.

South Yorkshire Armed Forces Covenant Project

In recognition of Dr Katherine Albertson’s (senior lecturer in criminology) long term research with the Armed Forces community, she was invited to join the Mayor of Rotherham to celebrate national Armed Forces Day.  As the Hallam lead on the South Yorkshire Armed Forces Covenant Project, Katherine’s work has helped establish both individual and regional strategic Armed Forces Covenant Action Plans.

Dr Albertson has also been invited to join several advisory boards to share her expertise and experience in support of the following:

 

 

 

  • The Queen’s University Belfast, Understanding ‘negative’ transitioning in British ex-Service personnel project which is funded by the Forces in Mind Trust
  • Barnado’s steering group which supports and oversees the Health Needs Assessment project aiming to understand the needs of imprisoned veterans and their families.
  • The Forces in Mind funded research project in partnership with the Probation Institute and Liverpool John Moores University.

Mooting students’ success

A law student called Emily Davison, has been awarded £11,000 for  the Stanley Levy Memorial Scholarship by Midldle Temple which she intends to put towards further study fees. Emily fed back:

‘I am absolutely thrilled and completely shocked. Thank you for the ongoing support and encouragement during my time at Hallam which has led to such an incredible award and opportunities to succeed as a barrister.’
