Professor David Best has recently been elected as the chair of the British Society of Criminology Prison Research Network.

He has also just returned from a trip as an honorary professor at Australian National University where he completed a full itinerary of activities which included delivering a RegNet seminar on ‘Strengths-based governance and culture change in UK prisons. This seminar was also delivered to the ACT Justice Community Safety Directorate where later he able to discuss these strengths-based approaches to justice delivery with the ACT Justice Minister Shane Rattenbury at a dinner.

The trip also included the opportunity to meet with academics from the University of Canberra where he met with Holly Northam from the Canberra Restorative Network and Professor Lorana Bartels.

In addition to this, David met with Mark Bartlett, the Governor of the ACT prison, where he was able to discuss prospective future collaborations as well as interviewing Rebecca Misty, the Deputy Prison Inspector for ACT where he agreed to do a future assets session with her in the ACT prison.

David  also supported Jason Payne from ANU and Ana-Maric Bliuc from Western Sydney University to submit an ARC Discovery project as well as providing support to Mirana Forsyth with her paper on SARV.

This busy successful trip was concluded with a short stay in Auckland, New Zealand, where he observed a drug court graduation, was a plenary at an international conference on drug courts, and ran a workshop and presentation on family recovery from drug and alcohol problems. He also chaired a session on community engagement in the Auckland judges’ chambers before finally presenting his work to the Community Alcohol and Drug services.
