Error message when using Google Apps with Internet Explorer 9

Staff who use Google apps on a University PCs may have noticed a message saying they are using an unsupported version of Internet Explorer. This happens with gmail, google calendars, google docs, google drive and google sites for both personal and institutional Google accounts. The message gives a link to upgrade the web browser. Please do not install another browser using the link provided. The latest version of Google Chrome is already available through the managed desktop and reinstalling that, a later version of Internet Explorer or another browser may cause problems.

Don’t worry, there is no risk to the security of your Google account if you choose to access it using Internet Explorer 9 (IE9). You will, however, find some features are no longer supported. These include the spell checker, keyboard shortcuts, creating filters and adding, editing, importing or deleting contacts. We continue to use IE9 to ensure compatibility with the University’s current range of teaching materials but expect to move to a more modern version – IE10 or 11 – this summer.

Using the Chrome browser which is currently available from the All Programs menu on the University’s managed desktop will give you access to the full versions of Google apps.
