Microsoft Office for Students

As a student it’s inevitable that you’ll spend a considerable amount of time writing assignments, designing presentations and a generally creating or displaying content on computers, tablets and smartphones. Sheffield Hallam has a large range of software available that you can use around the university (there is a list available on shuspace) and you also have access to Google Apps and Google Docs that can be accessed on most devices via apps or a web browser.

As a student you are also eligible for discounted software from a number of software companies including Microsoft Office in the form of Office 365 University. This is available direct from Microsoft at a price of £59.99 for a 4 year subscription (that’s only £1.25 a month) and should provide access to most students throughout your studies. You may also find this offer at online retailers such as Amazon or student software specialist’s software4students for lower prices

If you decide to take advantage of this offer you’ll will need a Microsoft Account (this used to be “Windows Live ID”) for your subscription to be linked to and must verify your status as a student. Once signed in to verify your status choose “Get verified through my School” enter your university email address and follow the instructions. If you decide to purchase from another retailer your will still require online activation and validation of your student status via Microsoft.

You can install the latest Office software on either 2 PCs or Macs and up to 2 mobile devices, either Android phones or iPhone (Windows phone has it included) and also enables creating and editing documents in the Office iPad app. The current suites are Office 2013 for Windows or Office 2011 for Mac and an active subscription entitles you to the latest versions when they become available. The following programs are included at the time of writing:

  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Outlook
  • OneNote (Available for free on the Mac App Store)
  • Publisher (Windows only)
  • Access (Windows only)

Additionally you also gain a further 20 GB of online storage with OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) for the duration of your subscription and 60 Skype world minutes per month.
