Wordle is a piece of online software for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and colour schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.
How do I use Wordle?
1. Wordle is an online tool and not downloadable, therefore you will need an internet connection to get started. Once you’re sure of that, visit www.wordle.net to take you to their homepage!
2. Next you need to select the Create tab on the top of the page
3. To create your word cloud, all you need to do is copy and paste a bunch of text into the first large box on the screen and click Go!
4. Then after a bit of loading, your world cloud will appear!
What are the benefits of using Wordle at SHU?
Wordle is a simple tool that takes no longer than a few minutes to create. It allows you to see things in a different perspective and may help set your creative juices flowing. The tool helps visualise text and highlights key words enabling you to see key themes within text that you inputted. It can be a use to all students out there from those who study English struggling with Shakespeare to those students creating presentations and wanting visual overviews.
To some up, Wordle has the potential to be used during your studies at SHU whatever course you happen to be studying. Give it a go, and please comment telling us what you think and what you have used it for!
