Students at Sheffield Hallam University automatically get access to a customised version of Google Mail. This post explores some of the features available in SHU Google Mail.
What is SHU Google Mail?
Sheffield Hallam University students are provided with an e-mail address to use during their studies. This e-mail address normally ends with “@student.shu.ac.uk”. SHU Google Mail is the application you need to use to send and receive e-mails from your student account.
Where can I find SHU Google Mail?
You can access your SHU Google Mail account from within shuspace.
The “Dashboard” (on the “My SHU” tab) shows a summary of how many e-mails you have in your inbox. To send and receive e-mail just click on the “Go To Inbox” link.
You can also access SHU Google Mail directly by browsing to http://mail.my.shu.ac.uk.
What does SHU Google Mail look like?
When you login to SHU Google Mail you should see something similar to the following screenshot. You can change the theme of your Google Mail page, so it might look a little different.
What are the key features?
Some of the key features of SHU Google Mail include:
- Archiving – With SHU Google Mail you have over 7000MB of storage, so you don’t need to worry about deleting e-mails. Instead you simply click the “Archive” button to move them out of your inbox. You can still get to them by using labels or the search box.
- Searching – The search box allows you to search your e-mail in the same way that you could use the main Google site to search the web.
- Labels – Labels are a way of categorizing your e-mails. You can assign multiple labels to an e-mail, and a label can be assigned to more than one e-mail.
- Chat – The chat window is a version of Google Talk. It allows you to communicate with your friends using instant messaging.
Do I need a Google Account?
Your SHU Google services (Mail, Calendar etc) are all accessed with your normal student login. You don’t need to register with Google to use them and they are fully separated from any existing Google Account(s) you may have had.

There is a wide range of help available for students. Online help is available in the shuspace Help and Support Tab and by clicking on the ‘Help’ button inside of SHU Google Mail. You can also contact one of the helpdesks or IT Advisory for telephone or face-to-face support.
