Sheffield Hallam University’s students and staff are horrified by the Russian military invasion in Ukraine, and desperately worried for the lives of ordinary Ukrainian people, who find themselves in the midst of a violent, unjustified and unjustifiable conflict that none of them wanted.

We know that you are deeply concerned about the impact of Putin’s war on your education and future and are looking for ways to continue your studies.

Applying for student funding

In the UK, students generally support the cost of education (tuition fees and living costs), through student loans. Applications usually open in Feb/March time, with a deadline of the end of May, ready to start your course in September.

Eligible students from Ukraine in the UK under the Ukraine schemes may be entitled to a range of support including tuition fee loans, maintenance loans, grants, and/or bursaries, and additional allowances related to your individual circumstances, for example if you have a disability.

The nature and amount of student support available depends on the level of qualification being studied, your personal circumstances, and the country in which you are studying.

Student finance will not usually fund a second undergraduate or Masters degree, if you already hold a qualification of that level (even from a different country). There are exceptions, including certain healthcare courses, or part-time courses in specific subject areas – to see the full list, visit the gov.uk webpage.

If you have been granted leave under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, Ukraine Family scheme, or the Ukraine Extension scheme, for new and continuing higher education courses you will be eligible for student support and will be charged ‘home status’ tuition fees, rather than international/overseas fees.

You do not need to prove 3 years residence in the UK before the start of your course.

From 1 August 2023, certain family members of persons who are granted leave under one of the Ukraine schemes will be eligible for student support and home fee status.
