SHU Mouth care matters

SHU Mouth Care Matters Project

Here at Sheffield Hallam University we are proudly part of the  National Mouth Care Matters project.

The National Mouth Care Matters programme was started in the acute trusts in Kent Surrey and Sussex and plans to roll out their programme Nationally. Their aim is to educate and inform healthcare professionals to provide high-quality oral care for patients in all care settings.

Oral health is an important part of general health and wellbeing. It allows people to eat, speak and socialise without discomfort or embarrassment. Research shows that oral care is often lacking in hospital and community care settings, especially to those patients who may be unable to carry out their own personal care and rely on others for support; Mouth Care Matters seeks to address this.
Health Education England.

We are the only university taking part in the national rollout of the Mouth care matters project. This will start with a pilot study with new level 4 adult student nurses in September 2018.

Our aim is to educate and inform our students about high-quality mouth care so this can be replicated in the practice setting. We will follow the National mouth care matters roll out along with more local guidance and information from the SWYPFT and SHU oral hygiene steering group.
