#hello my name is…
Launch of the Sheffield Hallam University champion program October 2018
In October 2018 we are launching the SHUhellomynameis project with all HWB students involved in level 4 IPE. We are asking them to become SHUhellomynameis champions.
Background
The ‘hello my name is…’ project, was an idea devised by MBE Dr Kate Granger who was a terminally ill cancer patient, campaigner and medical doctor.
Through her experiences of being a patient, she found how few health care professionals introduced themselves. During a hospital stay in August 2013, she made the stark observation that many staff looking after her did not introduce themselves before delivering care.
“This felt very wrong so encouraged and supported by my husband we decided to start a campaign to encourage and remind healthcare staff about the importance of introductions in the delivery of care. I firmly believe it is not just about knowing someone’s name, but it runs much deeper. It is about making a human connection, beginning a therapeutic relationship and building trust. In my mind it is the first rung on the ladder to providing compassionate care.”
Kate became frustrated with the number of staff who failed to introduce themselves to her when she was in hospital. Her campaign, started on social media platform Twitter and has inspired nurses, doctors, therapists, receptionists, porters, domestics and staff in all roles. She strived to improve the patient experience not only here in the UK, but across the world.
The campaign is simple, reminding staff to go back to basics and introduce themselves to patients properly.
SHU hellomynameis Champion program
We are the only university involved in developing the project further, to imbed into the interprofessional education curriculum, involving students’ and the practice setting
The program will involve the students’ undertaking an educational program and a number of tasks. There are two stages to the program which are briefly described below:
Stage 1
Join the #SHUhellomynameis campaign
Share your knowledge and appreciation of the campaign with your peers
Stage 2
Share your knowledge and appreciation of this campaign with your colleagues within practice;
For students’ who complete all tasks, they will be entered into a SHU hellomynameis compassionate care award nomination. The most innovative/impactful stage 2 design; judged by a panel (practice colleagues, university representatives), will be awarded a SHU hellomynameis compassionate care award.
This is very exciting for us here at SHU, to further embed the movement into our health and wellbeing faculty. We would love to hear your thoughts about this project, or if you would like to have more information regarding this or to become a champion please contact us

The campaign is simple, reminding staff to go back to basics and introduce themselves to patients properly. Kate talks about this as
“the first rung on the ladder to providing compassionate care”
and sees it as the start of making a vital human connection, helping patients to relax, and building trust. Feedback from patients across the country shows how vital this is to them, saying that the smallest things make the biggest difference.
The campaign is being endorsed by an increasing number of well-known figures including David Cameron, Jeremy Hunt, the Countess of Wessex, Bob Geldof and Drew Barrymore.
In her own words,
“I firmly believe it is not just about common courtesy, but it runs much deeper. Introductions are about making a human connection between one human being who is suffering and vulnerable, and another human being who wishes to help. They begin therapeutic relationships and can instantly build trust in difficult circumstances.”
This was the first ever tweet Kate sent using the hashtag… Kate Granger (2013)
“In my mind #hellomynameis is the first rung on the ladder to providing truly person-centred, compassionate care.”
Many NHS trusts both locally and nationally have taken on the project and embedded the ethos within their scheme of work, this includes local trusts connected to Sheffield Hallam University.
We launched SHU#hellomynameis project in Spring 2016. Kate was unfortunately too unwell to attend our launch event and sadly died a few weeks later. The inspirational Helena Davies who is also a patient; experiencing a chronic life-limiting, debilitating illness and a medical doctor, did attend our launch and portrayed an emotional and heartfelt account of why the campaign is so important to us all. Some quotes from the attendees
Thank you ‘Hello my name is’ team at SHU for organising such an amazing event. Although Dr Kate Granger was unable to attend, the equally as inspirational Dr Helena Davies did an amazing job sharing her incredible story.
I am so proud to be a Sheffield Hallam nursing student, supporting such an important campaign.
Thank you every so much for a great launch today. I found it really inspirational and gave me food for thought on how to change and influence things in practice
