{"id":227,"date":"2017-11-28T12:00:55","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T12:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/shaping\/?p=227"},"modified":"2018-10-26T13:47:28","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T13:47:28","slug":"leadership-bulletin-november-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/shaping\/2017\/11\/28\/leadership-bulletin-november-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Leadership Bulletin &#8211; November 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Shaping Futures update from the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/universitystrategy\/2017\/11\/28\/leadership-bulletin-november-2017\/\">November 2017 Leadership Bulletin<\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Professor Christina Hughes<\/p>\n<p>What makes something outstanding?\u00a0 I was mulling on this recently as our plan for Shaping Futures emphasises the importance of achieving consistently outstanding, not ordinary, outcomes.\u00a0 For me, outstanding is not a number or a metric or a statistic.\u00a0 Rather it is a summation of wisdom, knowledge, capability, energy and creativity.\u00a0 And, not to forget, achieving consistency requires organisation and planning to make all this happen.\u00a0\u00a0 We have outstanding practice in Hallam by the bucketful but I fear that we don\u2019t share this enough with others, learn from our colleagues in other departments, faculties and directorates and celebrate our outstandingness (if there is such a word!).<\/p>\n<p>At the most recent University Leadership Forum event, I asked eight of our colleagues to present an aspect of their work that was clearly outstanding.\u00a0 And we learnt so much.\u00a0 You can check this out yourself by clicking on the links below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using her experiences of working closely on the Shaping Futures plan, Claire Ward, Strategic Portfolio Manager in Strategic Portfolio and Business Change, gave us valuable insights into how to\u00a0organise and manage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/MikeMikeclark07\/from-ideas-to-a-programme-of-work-claire-ward-business-improvement-manager\">large scale change projects<\/a>.\u00a0 And how not to!<\/li>\n<li>Dr Emma Heron, Head of Academic Development, Development and Society who is heading up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/MikeMikeclark07\/impact-and-evaluation-what-listening-rooms-tell-us-about-the-student-experience-emma-heron-head-of-academic-development-ds\">Listening Rooms<\/a> project discussed the importance of this approach to understanding the student experience and triggered a conversation of how we might better listen to staff as well.<\/li>\n<li>Leading a National Student Survey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/MikeMikeclark07\/how-the-library-got-to-the-top-10-in-the-nss-nuala-devlin-director-of-library-and-student-support\">Top 10 library and student services<\/a> provision, Nuala Devlin, Director of Library and Student Support, outlined the importance of coherence,\u00a0ambition and foresight in realising such national standing.<\/li>\n<li>Ann Norton, Head of the Department of Management Studies also demonstrated how to achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/MikeMikeclark07\/nss-100-there-is-no-silver-bullet-ann-norton-head-of-department-sbs\">100% overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey<\/a> through painstaking attention to the student experience at all levels.<\/li>\n<li>Looking at curriculum development, Toni Schwarz, Head of Department Nursing and Midwifery discussed the extensive partnership and co-working relationships that are necessary in putting in place a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/MikeMikeclark07\/connected-curriculum-toni-schwarz-head-of-department-hwb\">connected curriculum<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>One of our National Teaching Fellows 2017, and with 10,000 followers on Twitter, Sue Beckingham (Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing) gave us a great lesson on how to develop a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/MikeMikeclark07\/national-teaching-fellowship-communicating-digitally-sue-beckingham-senior-lecturer-aces\">digital media profile<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Looking forward, Tony Clark, Head of Department, Computing, set out his plans for radical changes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/MikeMikeclark07\/creating-a-leading-applied-computing-department-tony-clark-head-of-department-aces\">Level 4 provision<\/a> that will aid retention and progression of students.<\/li>\n<li>And Luke Desforges, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/MikeMikeclark07\/new-hod-on-the-block-luke-desforges-head-of-department-ds\">new Head of Department<\/a> in Natural and Built Environment, provided a compelling account of how aspiration, motivation and a passion for excellence is driving his approach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope you find their accounts inspiring as well as helpful.
