{"id":979,"date":"2019-09-26T09:40:42","date_gmt":"2019-09-26T09:40:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/shaping\/?page_id=979"},"modified":"2019-09-30T08:11:13","modified_gmt":"2019-09-30T08:11:13","slug":"action-area-3-strengthen-community-awareness-and-actions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/shaping\/action-area-3-strengthen-community-awareness-and-actions\/","title":{"rendered":"Action Area 3: Strengthen community awareness and actions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><i><span style=\"color: #333333\">Mental health and wellbeing is supported when individuals within a community have the information and abilities needed to identify options and make decisions and choices conducive to good health.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">As identified in the Ottawa charter, health promotion works through empowering affected communities to take ownership and exercise agency in setting priorities, making decisions, and planning and implementing strategies to achieve better health (WHO 1986). For universities committed to better supporting student mental health, this means actively building the capacity of, and creating opportunities for, students and student organisations to effectively initiate, develop, contribute to and sustain activity and decision-making related to student life in general and student mental health and wellbeing in particular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Resources, programs and activities to strengthen awareness of mental health among all members of the university community will help to support student mental wellbeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 data-lineheight=\"20\" data-fontsize=\"18\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Core activities (to undertake in the first year):<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Running regular campaigns to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing and redress stigma associated with mental health difficulties<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Developing or reviewing online and print resources that promote mental health literacy among students and staff<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Facilitating student involvement in activities and programs to raise students\u2019 awareness of mental health issues and the academic benefits of mental wellbeing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Additional activities may include:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Involving students in developing and delivering wellbeing activities at key points during the academic calendar such as orientation, interim assessment and exams<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Organising, funding and promoting mental health training for student leaders involved in peer support programs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Involving students in data collection and evaluation of wellbeing programs and activities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 data-lineheight=\"20\" data-fontsize=\"18\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Possible indicators of progress for institutional self-monitoring:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Number of, and student participation in, activities and campaigns related to mental health and wellbeing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Number of, and participation in, student-led activities related to university life in general, as well as student mental wellbeing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Proportion of faculty\/department committees with student participation and representation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Number of, and participation in, mental health training programs for student leaders<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\">Proportion of staff participating in professional development programs related to student mental health and wellbeing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mental health and wellbeing is supported when individuals within a community have the information and abilities needed to identify options and make decisions and choices conducive to good health.
