Mathematics

Dear Student

Welcome to the Mathematics PGCE course at Sheffield Hallam University. I hope that you will enjoy studying with us and working with our partner schools in the region.

The PGCE is a very intensive course, and you will benefit from being well prepared in September. To help you with this, I have suggested some tasks for you to undertake in the time before enrolment. However, I appreciate that the amount of time you have to spend on these will depend on your other commitments.

I look forward to seeing you all in September.

Key Preparations/Readings

There are several reports available online that focus on the teaching of mathematics. You may wish to review some of these to develop your understanding of current issues in the subject.

Subject Knowledge Development

If you are concerned about your subject knowledge in relation to any areas of the curriculum (including A-level mathematics), you might want to make use of your time before the course starts to develop this. This could include looking back at any textbooks and/or revisions guides that you own.

There are also some online resources you might want to explore:

Curriculum and/or Key Specifications

You will need to familiarise yourselves with the current statutory requirements for the English education system.

Mathematics programme of study: Key Stages 1 to 4

There is also some non-statutory guidance for the Key Stage 3 mathematics curriculum that would be useful to engage with.

Mathematics guidance: Key Stage 3

Preliminary Subject Knowledge Audit

You will be required to complete a detailed subject knowledge audit at the start of the PGCE. This is based on the NCETM’s Secondary Mastery Professional Development materials.

At this stage, it would be useful to have a look at some of the materials to get a general understanding of the eleven themes across Key Stage 3 and 4.

You might also want to make a note of:

  • Any themes in which you feel confident / have substantial experience.
  • Any themes where you feel less confident / lack experience in.
