What has happened to you this week that has stood out in your mind?

It gets more difficult to recall details of an event as time passes – so it can be useful to make brief notes as soon as possible when a significant experience occurs.

On the other hand, our understanding and perception of events changes and develops with the passage of time. Why do you think this is?

Another model of reflection

Last week you used the Johns’ model to guide your reflection. This week you will be using the Gibbs model. Read up on this model – make sure you are aware of the background to this model, and find a version that provides a range of prompt questions for each stage.

Different ways of reflecting

Reflection is not just about writing. It often happens during dialogue with others. What opportunities do you have for reflecting at the moment? Are there people you find particularly helpful? Can you organise for more opportunities to reflect with them?

Your reflections

This week – select something that has stood out to you – that you thought about after it happened. It should be a specific event. Use the Gibbs model to structure your written reflection. Use this opportunity to try to understand the differences between the stages of the model. It may feel repetitive to go through each stage. This is because you might naturally move from one stage to another in your own thinking. Models like Gibbs are designed to try to help you really look at each stage – as sometimes we miss stages out in our reflections, or get stuck on one stage.

How does the experience of using it differ from the Johns model? Which did you prefer?

MSc OT students – further guidance for you is here.
