Getting started with reflection

  • Think back to a meaningful experience
  • Ask yourself questions to help you analyse the experience
  • What ideas do you have about what took place?
  • What have you learned from the experience? What action will you take based on this?
  • Make notes at each stage

Use some of these questions to help you reflect. Not all of them will be relevant to every situation. They are prompts, not instructions.

  • What stands out for you from the experience?

  • What went well? What did not go well?

  • What were you feeling?

  • What were you thinking at the time? (Reflection in action)

  • Why do you think things happened the way they did?

  • Try to look at the experience from different perspectives

  • What do you think other people were thinking and feeling?

  • Does the experience link to anything you have done in university?

  • Does this remind you of other experiences you have had?

  • Is there theory you can apply to the experience?

  • What assumptions did you have?

  • What assumptions did other people have?

  • How has your understanding changed?

  • Are there any gaps in your skills or knowledge?

  • What will you do differently in the future?
