The Driscoll / Borton model of reflection is one that many people find useful as it is very straightforward. Read about it here and have a go at using it this week.

Becoming more reflective

These five weeks have aimed to introduce you to the concept of reflection, and its value for you as a professional. There are many different models that are designed to help you reflect – these might feel clunky to use, but can assist you in seeing events from different perspectives and uncovering your own, and others’ assumptions.

Another way to improve your reflection, as mentioned before, is to discuss with others – however – to get the most from this you will have to approach with an open mind and be prepared to be challenged.

Reflection – or reflective practice?

Engaging in individual pieces of reflection is useful -but only in so far as it is part of being a reflective practitioner doing reflective practice.

You should now have the tools to make reflection a regular part of your professional development. The next step is to maintain a regular reflective journal. There are some tips on this here – from a clinical psychology perspective.

Your final task

For week five – consider how you might set up a reflective journal. This could be a folder in dropbox, a notebook, or anything which suits you and your routines.

And try using the What? So what? Now what? model to reflect on something that is coming up in your future – this might be an upcoming placement, a particular service user, a meeting, an interview, or just your next day at work.

How are you feeling about it, why do you think you are feeling like that, and what does that tell you?
