We are looking for a dedicated individual to undertake the role of external examiner for our MSc Leadership in Health and Social Care course at Sheffield Hallam University.

Your role and responsibilities would include:

  • confirming the comparability of standards of student performance at Sheffield Hallam University with those of similar modules at other UK Institutions of Higher Education;
  • confirming that the assessment process in its entirety is sound, and has been fairly conducted with full regard to justice to students;
  • Reporting and advising on the above by means of approving coursework and examination papers and providing an annual report to the University.

You should have appropriate expertise and experience to be able to undertake a role in the assurance of academic standards in Higher Education.

The appointees will be required to moderate a sample of scripts in relation to selected modules within the above programmes. You will also be required to produce an annual report and attend Assessment Boards as appropriate.

Departmental Apprenticeship External Examiner for Department of Management
We are looking for a dedicated individual to undertake the role of Undergraduate Departmental Apprenticeship External Examiner for our Department of Management at Sheffield Hallam University.

The Department of Management is the largest department in the university and has a substantial apprenticeship offer in leadership and management including the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, Retail Leaders Degree Apprenticeship and Senior Leaders Apprenticeship with the university being rated as a ‘Good Provider’ by Ofsted in 2022.

In addition to our Course External Examiners, we are looking for a Departmental Apprenticeship External Examiner (Undergraduate provision only) to oversee the apprenticeship provision. The DAEE will be responsible for providing external scrutiny of the requirements of an apprenticeship, such as:

  • whether employers’ needs are being met by the apprenticeship(s) the Department delivers;
  • whether the integration of on and off the job training is effective in learners developing and consolidating the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) they require to be successful;
  • whether the University has effective oversight of learners to ensure that learners are making expected progress and that swift interventions are taken where this may not be the case; and
  • whether sub-contracting arrangements (where relevant) are appropriate and learners at sub-contracted provision are making expected progress

Your role and responsibilities would include:

  • Liaise with at least 3 employers per academic year to gain feedback and ensure employer needs are being met.
  • Visit subcontracting partners (where applicable) twice during your 4 year tenure
  • Review of Apprentice Progress Reviews from three way review meetings.
  • Attend the Departmental Apprenticeship Progression Boards
  • Submit annual report to summarise the findings of the above actions and note any aspects of good practice or issues of concern

You should have appropriate expertise and experience to be able to undertake a role in the assurance of academic standards in Higher Education. Knowledge of Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework, Further Education and Skills Handbook would be advantageous in undertaking the role. A knowledge of Degree Apprenticeships, in particular the Chartered Manager Apprenticeship and Retail Leaders Standard would be of value.
