Bloomberg-in Marvellous<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n

On the 16th<\/sup> January 2019, Sheffield Hallam University welcomed a number of students from King Ecgberts School in Sheffield to our Bloomberg Suite. Bloomberg is a computer software system that allows investors to monitor and analyse real-time financial market data. Students at the University can use the Terminal to gain real-world experience of using industry standard data systems, gaining a great skillset ready for work within the financial industry.<\/p>\n

In a session run by one of the Senior Lecturers in Banking, Investment and Financial Management, Firoz Bhaiyat, students had the opportunity to invest in stocks on the London Stock Exchange using the Bloomberg Terminal. Using a training feature on the Terminal, students from King Ecgberts were given a budget of \u00a33.5million each to invest in stocks. They were challenged to keep up with live business and financial news reports to make informed decisions on where to invest their cash. They had to closely monitor which businesses were doing well on the stock market and be opportunistic in their investments.<\/p>\n

The aim of the game was to beat the market; whoever made the most profit from their investments was declared the winner.<\/p>\n

This was a great opportunity for these students to gain an insight as to what it would be like working in banking, finance, investment and wealth management. Bloomberg is widely used by firms within the industry, with an annual cost of around \u00a316,000, making it the most expensive financial data provider. Training and experience using such software is a highly desired quality of any graduate looking to go into the world of finance.<\/p>\n
