Raise awareness of SHU-led initiatives

The aim of this project was to expose all staff to SHU initiatives including the Race Equality Charter and the central repository of degree awarding gap projects. An update will be given to academy leadership team and all staff meetings in 2019.

Challenging Whiteness in the Curriculum

The aim of this work is to raise awareness of a need to implement changes to the curriculum or to pedagogy to help decolonise the curriculum. At all staff meetings discussions of how this was possible took place and staff had the opportunity to take part in networking opportunities both on social media and physical networks. Within these meetings the status of the awareness of the BAME attainment gap was considered and staff agreed that this had improved since attending a workshop presentation by Jacqueline Stevenson (Hallam Guild) or Abdullah Okud (former SHU SU President). In addition, course leaders chose to open up a discussion at the Departmental Board on a need to Narrow the Gap.  A number of staff have actively engaged with Amanda (project lead) about the changes they are making in order to de-colonise their curriculums.

Upon reflection of the initial stages of the project it has been noted that the awareness of the need to Narrow the Gap is certainly higher now than a year ago as evidenced by the fact that all staff attended a workshop presentation by Jacqueline Stevenson (Hallam Guild) or Abdullah Okud (former SHU SU President). In addition, Course Leaderss chose to open up a discussion at the Departmental Board on a need to Narrow the Gap. A number of staff have emailed me or dropped by the talk to me about changes they have made or plan to make to the curriculum.

Support and Belonging

The aim of this project area is to increase the support opportunities and sense of belonging among BAME students. Different approaches have been adopted in different courses with examples including developing ideas for a student online support group, and promotion of Studiosity as evidence suggests that BAME students are less likely to ask for help and support.

The department highlighted BAME opportunities in examples of societies during induction.  Course leaders have promoted a BAME Sports Coaching group which has further led to Physical Education and School Sport have showing an interest in forming a group. Staff within the department were approached by students and indicated they had an interest in forming such a group.  However, so far no one has come forward to help promote/run the groups.  The department is currently working alongside another department within Health and Wellbeing who have reported similar challenges.

As of yet, this project is not yet scalable or transferable. Similar efforts made in other depts in the Faculty with the same result.

Staff Diversity

The department aims to increase the diversity of staff delivering teaching as Associate Lecturers (ALs)/Special Visiting Lecturers (SVLs) by undertaking three strands of work:

  1. Build a network of BME potential SVLs and ALs across the Academy.
  2. Deliver “SHU Brew Seminars” given by BAME and female speakers in the Sport Business Management subject group.
  3. Increase the number of ALs/alumni events with BAME representation in the Sport Development with Coaching subject group.

The project lead is currently working with HR to find an approach which means we can build informal networks to tackle indirect discrimination.

This project is highly transferable to develop informal networks to tackle indirect discrimination.

Dissertation Writing Support Drop-in

This project aimed to reduce the BAME attainment gap in the Academy of Sport and Physical Activity through writing support drop-in sessions for dissertation students. The drop-in sessions were delivered by dissertation tutors in the Academy who had previously undertaken a one-hour workshop designed to enhance their ability to support student writing. The writing workshop was delivered by an experienced TESOL (Teaching English as a Second or Other Language) tutor two weeks before the first drop-in session. The outcomes of the dissertation writing drop-in sessions only served to widen the BAME/white attainment gap as only white students attended. Out of a possible 450 students, 27 attended the drop-in sessions.  All attendees were white.
However, the project had raised awareness and sparked interest in the BAME attainment gap across the Academy resulting in four more interventions being held.

This project is currently not yet replicable, transferable or scalable. More work and time are yet to be invested in order to explain the benefits of dissertation to students and to promote better engagement with the sessions by BAME students.
