“The Black Attainment Gap: Viewing the student experience through a race lens”

As Universities are set targets by the Office for Students for the first time to close the BME Attainment gap, we’ll explore the scale of the challenge facing the Higher Education sector. From student support to curriculum design, all aspects of the student experience for BME students will come under scrutiny as institutions set out to tackle the systemic disparities in attainment. After an overview of the historical and present contexts, we’ll look at the current challenges and opportunities open to universities to view the student experience through a race context and implement system wide change to tackle these inequalities.”

Keynote Speaker Amatey Doku, Consultant at Nous Group, is the former Vice President Higher Education at the National Union of Students and a former President of Cambridge University Students’ Union. At NUS he led on work on the BME Attainment Gap, culminating in a recent report, Closing the Gap, published jointly by NUS and Universities UK.

The University’s Race Equality Forum is hosting the event with networking and refreshments from 5.30pm. The lecture will begin at 6pm with discussion and Q&A, closing at 7.30pm.
