If you want to understand something, write about it. If you want to master something, teach it.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em>\u2013\u00a0<strong>Yogi Bhajan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This statement gets to the heart of why teaching,\u00a0 and \u00a0mentoring and coaching teachers, can be so rewarding yet also so challenging.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It would seem to be intuitive that teaching and guiding others to do something you love, and which enthuses you, will bring rewards to both teacher and the learner.\u00a0 But as beginner teachers often find, being a successful teacher can be an elusive goal.\u00a0\u00a0 The same could also be said for being a new mentor.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Didn\u2019t I tell them that last week?\u00a0\u00a0 But I showed him how to do that yesterday?\u00a0\u00a0 Why can\u2019t they share their experiences and learn from them?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Did she not learn anything from watching\u00a0 Dawn teach \u2013 she is such a natural teacher?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you \u00a0have shared frustrations like these with colleagues at different times \u2013 I certainly have! \u00a0\u00a0Mentoring, coaching, guiding and supporting trainee teachers is complex and sometimes counter intuitive.\u00a0\u00a0 Taking part in this course will help keep the frustrations to a minimum.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/exchange.shu.ac.uk\/owa\/redir.aspx?SURL=91bFpv8H2OeYDhiU2_gSORQZUuhulmQYq7WfguP15h1fi5uAPQnUCGgAdAB0AHAAOgAvAC8AdABkAHQAcgB1AHMAdAAuAG8AcgBnAC8AYQBiAG8AdQB0AC8AZABnAHQA&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2ftdtrust.org%2fabout%2fdgt\" target=\"_blank\">Research<\/a> suggests that the best forms of professional development support sustained engagement on problems of your choice, involving work with peers and interaction with expertise from outside your work context. \u00a0Crucially the engagement is sustained over time, not just one-off sessions.\u00a0\u00a0 Working on enhancing your mentoring skills over an initial five week period, with like minded people potentially from schools and colleges, guided by school and university based experienced (and expert) mentors will be an excellent learning experience.\u00a0\u00a0 I shall be joining myself\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 my mentoring skills are rusty!<\/p>\n<p>This SHOOC course also looks to the future of setting and university collaboration.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/exchange.shu.ac.uk\/owa\/redir.aspx?SURL=j2BNgWEaZFd80jSf0oi197YqLp76ceoK78SHEVch5kFfi5uAPQnUCGgAdAB0AHAAcwA6AC8ALwBiAGwAbwBnAHMALgBzAGgAdQAuAGEAYwAuAHUAawAvAHYAYwAvADIAMAAxADYALwAwADQALwAyADUALwByAGUAZgByAGUAcwBoAGkAbgBnAC0AdABoAGUALQB1AG4AaQB2AGUAcgBzAGkAdAB5AHMALQBzAHQAcgBhAHQAZQBnAHkALwA.&amp;URL=https%3a%2f%2fblogs.shu.ac.uk%2fvc%2f2016%2f04%2f25%2frefreshing-the-universitys-strategy%2f\" target=\"_blank\">Sheffield Hallam<\/a> University has committed to become the UK\u2019s \u2018leading applied university\u2019 by 2030.\u00a0\u00a0 This sounds a long way off and open-ended, but one concrete step we want to make in the Sheffield Institute of Education is to support the development of <strong>setting (school, college, nursery) based teacher educators<\/strong> as a key role in the future development of trainee teachers.\u00a0\u00a0 We see a future in which expert practitioners work across school and university settings and educational researchers work in settings and across many departments in the university. \u00a0Enhancing your mentoring skills enables you to match your current \u2018practice expertise\u2019 with the expertise needed to support beginning teacher development. \u00a0That\u2019s why you can complete the course and use your learning towards a <a href=\"https:\/\/exchange.shu.ac.uk\/owa\/redir.aspx?SURL=apdpPxHlNV9if-_yBGB1A6Qrq1Gmjo34Cv26hq5kcE9fi5uAPQnUCGgAdAB0AHAAcwA6AC8ALwB3AHcAdwAuAHMAaAB1AC4AYQBjAC4AdQBrAC8AcwB0AHUAZAB5AC0AaABlAHIAZQAvAGYAaQBuAGQALQBhAC0AYwBvAHUAcgBzAGUALwBtAGEAcABnAGQAaQBwAHAAZwBjAGUAcgB0AC0AZQBkAHUAYwBhAHQAaQBvAG4A&amp;URL=https%3a%2f%2fwww.shu.ac.uk%2fstudy-here%2ffind-a-course%2fmapgdippgcert-education\" target=\"_blank\">Masters qualification<\/a>.
