Achievement

Participants in the SHOOC can receive recognition for their mentoring skills and knowledge in three ways:

  • five digital Badges awarded for completing tasks and activities, awarded via the Badgr micro-credentialling platform (see our issuer page)
  • digital Certificate of Completion from Sheffield Institute of Education at Sheffield Hallam University

Criteria for Awarding Digital Badges and Certificate of Completion

For the successful completion and submission of each workbook, participants are awarded a digital badge. There are  five Digital Badges, one for each workbook of the SHOOC and a Certificate of Completion for completing all 5 workbooks . Each workbook takes approximately five hours to complete, and the course is approximately 25 hours in total. The workbooks are assessed by one of our experienced team of senior mentors against the following criteria:

Workbook 1: Introduction and Induction.

The badge is awarded for the successful completion of the workbook, involving:

  • Study and critical reflection on the Workbook Reader covering key ideas in mentoring and coaching.
  • Engagement with a Case Study on what mentees expect and hope for in a mentor, with critical reflection drawing on one’s own experience of mentoring.
  • Contribution to a discussion topic on mentoring, top tips on being a mentor, and describing an effective mentee.
  • Self-evaluation against the mentor standards.

Workbook 2: Modelling & Developing Professional Relationships

The badge is awarded for the suceesful completion of the workbook, involving:

  • Study and critical reflection on the Workbook Reader covering key ideas in modelling and developing professional relationships.
  • Engagement with a Case Study on mentors develop secure relationships which impact positively on mentee well-being, with critical reflection drawing on one’s own experience of mentoring.
  • Contribution to a discussion topic on how to develop trust and confidence in mentoring relationships, top tips on establishing trusting relationships, and critical incidents in mentoring.
  • Self-evaluation against Mentor Standard 1: Personal Qualities

Workbook 3: Developing Mentees’ Professionalism

This badge is awarded for successful completion of workbook 3, involving:

  • Study and critical reflection on the Workbook Reader covering key ideas in developing mentees’ professionalism.
  • Engagement with a Case Study on how mentors and senior mentors support, guide and develop mentees to become more professional in their practice, with critical reflection drawing on one’s own experience of mentoring.
  • Contribution to a discussion topic on mentees’ participation in school life, top tips on developing a mentee’s professional approach, and key professional attributes.
  • Self-evaluation against Mentor Standard 3: Professionalism

Week 4 Badge
Supporting and
Guiding Mentees

Workbook 4: Supporting and Guiding Mentees

This badge is awarded for successful completion of workbook 4, involving:

  • Study and critical reflection on the Workbook Reader covering key ideas in supporting and guiding mentees.
  • Engagement with a Case Study on how mentors can guide, stretch, and challenge the mentee’s practice, with critical reflection drawing on one’s own experience of mentoring.
  • Contribution to a discussion topic on the part a mentor can play in developing teaching quality and effectiveness, and how to give effective feedback.
  • Self-evaluation against Mentor Standard 2: Teaching

Workbook 5: Mentors, Mentees and Professional Development,

This badge is awarded for successful completion of workbook 5, involving:

  • Study and critical reflection on the Workbook Reader covering key ideas in ensuring consistency by working with other mentors and partners to moderate judgements; and continuing to develop your own mentoring practice and subject and pedagogical expertise by accessing appropriate professional development and engaging with robust research.
  • Engagement with a Case Study on professional development pathways, with critical reflection drawing on one’s own professional career.
  • Contribution to a discussion topic on the best form and focus for professional learning of mentees and mentors, and the benefits of standardisation of mentoring practice.
  • Self-evaluation against Mentor Standard 4: Self-development and working in partnership.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded for the successfull completion and submission of all five workbooks.
