Welcome to the Blog for the Enhance your Mentoring Skills, the only open online course (SHOOC) that is mapped to the UK National Standards for School-based Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Mentors (2016). This blog contains information about the course, including how to enrol, about the course team, the curriculum and syllabus, and how your achievement will be recognised. It will also be a space for news and posts by people working in and with schools in a mentoring context. See the latest SHOOC Flyer (download) for more information or contact the course team at mentorshooc@shu.ac.uk

quote2Why are we running the SHOOC again? We have run SHOOC twice in 2017 and to date 520 people have registered registered, 390 workbooks have been submitted and 59 participants have completed all five workbooks. The feedback has been very positive and evaluations speak of the value of the experience and the quality and relevance of the materials. A number of people asked whether we would run the SHOOC again and if it could be open for an extended period. We are running it again for those people and also to target schools who are mentoring NQTs in 2017-18.

workstation-30What is a SHOOC? A SHOOC is an open online course organised and run by the Sheffield Institute of Education, at Sheffield Hallam University. It works on the principle of open educational resources (OERs) provided free to interested parties with open content (free to use but copyrighted to SHU) with ‘badges’ for successful tasks, a certificate for completed participation, with an option to go on to take a masters module in Coaching and Mentoring*.

Who is the SHOOC for? Participation in the SHOOC is open to anyone who wants to be involved online from anywhere in the world. It will focus on pre-school, school and post 16 mentoring in the UK context and the curriculum is mapped to the UK National Standards for school-based initial teacher training (ITT) mentors (2016).

quote5What form will the SHOOC take? The SHOOC will run online in Pebblepad. The tutor team includes school mentor trainers and academics who specialise in teacher education. Participants will be given an account and access to all the materials and activities, including Pebblepad workbooks comprising tutor videos, case studies, and active live webinars, forum discussions, social media and e-tivities. Digital badges are awarded for the successful completion of each week’s workbook (about 5 hour’s work each week) and if you achieve all five badges you will receive a Digital Certificate of completion.
