Getting started in the library

Welcome! We know there’s so much to know and remember right now but we’d like to tell you about the library so that you have the best experience at Sheffield Hallam University!
What you need to know about the libraries​​

Think it’s all about books? There’s so much more…
  • Libraries are open 24/7/365 Adsetts [map] and Collegiate [map]
Tip – that includes weekends and Christmas Day!
  • There’s a free shuttle bus to take you between campus’ – see the info here which includes walking and cycling routes too
  • There’s no need to buy water – there’s water fountains on each floor in Adsetts, and in the café area on level 4. At Collegiate free water is available near vending machines on the ground floor
Tip – bring your water bottle to keep yourself hydrated while you’re studying
  • You can also access free hot water in both libraries. In Adsetts it’s near the vending machines behind the café area on level 4. In Collegiate you can find it in the café area on the ground floor

Tip – if you bring hot food into the libraries please eat it in the café areas and help us keep everyone happy!
A variety of study areas

  • There are a quiet, silent, individual, reading, PC, no PC, power enabled, meeting rooms and group study areas in both libraries
  • Peak library times are 11am to 5pm at Adsetts and 11am to 4pm at Collegiate.
  • You  can advance book PCs, meeting rooms and booths for when you need them here
Tip – if you prefer a quieter or a less busy environment, study off peak between 4/5pm to 11am
  • Don’t get stuck looking for resources, try the subject guides and RLO’s (Reading Lists Online) on the Library Gateway here

Your SHUcard

  • You need your SHUcard to enter both libraries
  • Borrow books and other resources
  • Print and photocopy
  • Buy food and drinks from the café

  • Access Adsetts library via the level 6 entrance on Arundel Gate between 9pm and 7.30am
Tip – remember to bring your SHUcard to the library

borrow 25 books

When you borrow a book, this is what you need to know
  • Borrow up to 25 books
  • There are self-service machines on Adsetts Level 4 and the main room downstairs at Collegiate so you can borrow 24hrs a day
  • Items renew automatically each week  unless it’s requested by someone else
  • You’ll receive email and text reminders about your borrowing every month
  • Check My Library Account here to manage your loans and avoid any library charges

Computers & Macs

  • There’s a variety of PCs to choose from including, quick access, group meeting rooms, booths/tables and specialist software PCs
  • You can advance book PCs, meeting rooms and booths for when you need them here
Tip – PCs automatically log out after 15 mins of inactivity after which it becomes free for someone else to book
  • Apple iMac computers are available at both libraries

Printing in the library
You’ll need printing credit before you can print in the library – you can top-up your print account online and at the print top-up kiosks located in the library.

Borrow a laptop

If you fancy borrowing a laptop, there are plenty of options
  • Library loan laptops available to borrow for a maximum of 1 week. You’ll need your SHUcard to take it out and you’ll need login before leaving the library

  • There are self-service laptops and Chromebooks for use in libraries only
  • Smart locker laptops are also available around campus. You’ll need your SHUcard to take them out, it’s a 3hr loan period and a charger is not supplied.

Academic Skills

The Skills Centre can help you to develop your academic study.
  • The Skills Centre run workshops, like Introduction to Academic Writing, Planning and Structuring Assignments, Critical Writing.
  • APA is  the main referencing style so if you’re new to referencing and want to find out more, see the library guide to referencing here
