This is your guide to getting support if you’re going home or staying in Sheffield over the summer, as well as some reminders…
Reminders…
  • finalise your funding plans – see Student Funding on shuspace
  • disability drop-in services are available daily for all students. All your questions are answered here on shuspace – see Disabled Student Support
  • Microsoft Office packages are free with SHU accounts to help with your studying  – see Free and discounted software
  • remember to arrange a print credit refund if your course has finished. Phone 0114 225 3333 option 3 or visit during library Helpdesk opening hours
  • check out internships and Summer jobs  – see Careers & Employability  
  • stay well, stay safe
  • help with budgeting including Blackbullion, an online resource to improve your financial skills
Going home…
we’ll miss you but here are some hints and tips to keep studying when you’re miles away from us!
Do you know…
  • you can study in the libraries of other universities using the Sconul Access scheme? Just complete an online form and if your application is successful in a matter of days you’ll receive an email. Take this to the university library you would like to work in, along with proof of address and your SHU card and you’re good to go. Full details are on shuspace Using other libraries
  • you are likely to be able to connect to other universities wifi with Eduroam
  • happily, you can still access everything off campus when you’re away. There’s our 24/7 virtual support team who you can contact over the phone or via Chat For Help – see more info here.
  • you can view online resources via the Library Gateway include ebooks, articles, subject guides  and databases. Just make sure you login to Library Gateway first to ensure you get full access to all the resources
  • the Bridge offers study skills support with everything from writing your dissertations to managing your time to referencing to maths and stats and everything in between
  • there’s 24/7 virtual support who you can contact by phone or via Chat For Help – see more info here
  • there’s online stress and anxiety support – such as Big White Wall, more details here
Staying in Sheffield
  • borrowing books – loans automatically renew every week unless someone else requests it. We suggest you check My library Account regularly to help manage your loans. If a book needs returning because you receive a recall email you can always post it. The address is inside of the front cover and we recommend you send it by Recorded Delivery. There are no library charges if it’s posted within the 5 day grace period. If you’re unsure about any of this, find more info here or get in touch with us here.
  • Summer skills from the Bridge – from the 21st May there are writing forums and tutorials to boost your academic writing and study skills. All you need to do is book a place on one of our sessions and bring along a short extract of your writing on a USB stick. Whether you’re in the early stages of planning your writing, or working on refining that final draft, our tutors can provide you with tips and strategies to improve your academic writing and build confidence. Sessions are small, supportive and focused on action planning, with a maximum of 4 participants. See full details here
  • if you have friends at other uni’s, coming back to Sheffield for the summer and want to work in SHU Libraries they are likely to be able to connect to SHU wifi with Eduroam
  • Library Helpdesks – from 21st May both Helpdesks will be open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm as well as self-service whenever you need it
  • as usual there’s the 24/7 virtual support team who you can contact by phone or via Chat For Help – see more info here
  • some cafe’s will remain open over the summer – you can keep up to date by selecting a campus and building here.
  • free hot water is available in both library café areas
