Publishing

There are many things to consider when publishing your research.

Choosing where to publish

Choosing where to publish is a vital part of the publishing process.  Choosing the right journal, conference or book publisher for your research is important and you should research your options carefully.   You also need to make sure you are choosing a trustworthy venue for your work.

Making your work Open Access

Open Access (OA) is about making research publications freely accessible online at no charge to the reader, and with any restrictions on re-use minimised. The aim is to give researchers, members of the public, and industry access to all the research they need and to give them the freedom to build upon research already carried out.

When research outputs are freely available they can have a wider reach, receive more attention and there is a higher potential for the work to have real world impact.

Writing your manuscript

Writing for publication is a big topic with many aspects.  What you need to consider will vary depending on things like your discipline and the type of output you are writing. If you are new to writing for publication, the resources and tips about writing your manuscript will help you to get started and to find out about related topics such as plain language summaries, data statements and unique identifiers.

ISBNs, ISSNs and DOIs

Publications and research outputs often have unique identifiers that identify the work.  Publishers usually assign these identifiers. This information explains more about ISBNs, ISSNs and DOIs.

ORCID

A key thing to do is to create an ORCID ID. This is a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher.  Many publishers and funders will ask you for your ORCID ID.

Peer review

If you are new to academic publishing, it is a good idea to find out more about the Peer review process and the various types of peer review that you may encounter.

Developing a publication strategy.

A publication strategy will help you to think about what you want to achieve through publishing your research and to focus on the best way to achieve this.

Use the University's guide to  developing a personal publication strategy to help you write your strategy.
