Upcoming Event: Assessment Design – Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL)
About the session
The University has a new process and system on recognition of prior learning enabling both prospective applicants and existing students to claim exemption from modules. This may be in the form of certificated credit (e.g. from another institution or course: RPCL) or based on work or other prior experience: RPEL. This workshop will focus on the latter and will answer questions such as:
- How do I evaluate a claim? What are the key factors?
- What kind of assessment can I use to make a judgement on exemption?
- Who else needs to be involved and how does it work?
Participants will be given a range of scenarios to draw out the issues. They will also complete an RPEL pro-forma for one of their own modules which can be used to address future claims.

Who is it for?
The session will be of particular interest to module/course leaders, academic advisers and LTA Leads, but is open to anyone with an interest in assessment, employability and student attainment and success.
What next?
You leave the session with a good understanding of RPEL at SHU – you will know the policy and process and how to access the guidance resources. You will leave with a completed RPEL module pro-forma which you can use in your own practice/context.
