Select and release printing – to save paper and improve confidentiality

March 2nd, 2015 | Posted by Jennifer Kennedy in Uncategorized

We’re introducing a ‘select and release’ system to manage staff print jobs.  This means that, when staff collect their printing, they will log in and select which jobs they would like before printing them out.  The new system will improve confidentiality and reduce waste.

Why are we doing this?

At the end of each day, many pages of unwanted printing lie piled up on and near printers around the University.  Often people print a job and forget about it or send something to print accidentally.  This not only wastes paper and ink, it also allows potentially sensitive or personal information to be seen by people it wasn’t intended for.  The new system will avoid this..

How does it work?

Staff log in to the printer using their SHUcards (or manually) and press the release button.  Then they select the jobs they wish to print and press the blue button to start printing.

When will select and release printing be introduced where I work?

We are introducing it across the University building by building.  It’s already being used in several buildings at Collegiate Campus and in the new building at 1 Furnival Square. We will shortly be releasing a schedule of dates on which we plan to roll it out across the rest of the University.
