{"id":719,"date":"2017-09-05T07:27:54","date_gmt":"2017-09-05T07:27:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/hwbstaffnews\/?p=719"},"modified":"2017-09-05T07:52:09","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T07:52:09","slug":"transfer-deadline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/hwbstaffnews\/2017\/09\/05\/transfer-deadline\/","title":{"rendered":"Football finance experts across the media following summer transfer deadline day."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Dan Plumley spoke to the Daily Star about how there are more lucrative transfer deals to come if the likes of Netflix and Amazon make bids for Premier League TV rights.<\/p>\n<h2>More Neymar-style MEGA deals to come as Netflix and Amazon bid for Premier League rights<\/h2>\n<p class=\"lead\">The fees demanded by football clubs to prize their star players away are likely to rise to astronomical amounts with more lucrative broadcasting deals to come, experts have claimed.<\/p>\n<section class=\"text-description\">It has been a barmy few months in football but this week we saw the transfer window close.\u00a0The record for the world\u2019s most expensive player was smashed with PSG\u2019s mind-boggling \u00a3198m Neymar signing.And the Premier League spent more money than ever before \u2013 with huge names like Lukaku, Morata and Salah changing clubs.\u00a0We&#8217;ve even seen staggeringly high bids for the likes of Liverpool&#8217;s Philippe Coutinho rejected.<\/p>\n<p>Football transfer deals may look like a bubble about to burst \u2013 but future fees could spiral even higher with more lucrative TV and sponsorship deals on the way.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"text-description pullquote-right\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"quote\">\u201cThe money we\u2019re seeing is primarily because we\u2019re two years into the most lucrative TV deal in history\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Dr Daniel Plumley<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Speaking to Daily Star Online, sport finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money we\u2019re seeing is primarily because we\u2019re two years into the most lucrative TV deal in history. The Neymar deal exaggerated it even more with clubs saying \u2018if he\u2019s worth that, we\u2019re going to increase the value of our player\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is particularly apparent with English clubs selling to each other and foreign clubs selling to English clubs. But when the next TV deal is negotiated, it could be even more extreme.\u00a0The likes of Amazon and Netflix could bid to join the party and if that\u2019s the case we\u2019ll see bigger and more lucrative transfer deals in future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"text-description\">Dr Plumley \u2013 who works at Sheffield Hallam University \u2013 did concede that there is a risk to the astronomical financial structure of the league, though.Asked whether a Leeds United-style financial collapse was a possibility, he said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Relegation is the biggest threat to the financial security of any club.\u00a0Teams like Stoke are an example of good practice \u2013 they\u2019ve come up, settled themselves and built year on year.\u00a0But many don\u2019t do that \u2013 Portsmouth and Blackpool are examples of where it\u2019s gone wrong for top flight clubs in the past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Aston Villa is an interesting one. If they\u2019re not promoted from the Championship this year they\u2019re on their last parachute payment from the Premier League.\u00a0After that they could be in big trouble \u2013 high-profile names could leave and they risk a double-dip relegation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"text-description\">And Kieran Maguire \u2013 a lecturer in football finance at the University of Liverpool \u2013 agrees with Dr Plumley about the role of TV in the current market.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe football market is over-reliant on broadcasting income, but I think the Premier League is safe because there are potential new bidders for the TV rights.
