This story originally appeared on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/anglia\/2017-08-24\/stroll-on-thousands-miss-out-on-health-benefits-of-walking\/\" target=\"_blank\">ITV.com<\/a> &#8211; and you can find out more about the App <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/oneyou\/active10\/home#1zPbAMmWeKo5HbWV.97\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shocking figures from Public Health England (PHE) show that around 3\/4 of a million adults fail to walk for ten minutes at least once a month.<\/p>\n<div class=\"item__content-block item__content-block--markdown\">\n<p>Over 740,000 adults aged 40-60 in our region do not achieve ten minutes of continuous brisk walking over the course of a month and are missing out on health benefits, says the health body.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item__content-block item__content-block--emphasis\">\n<div class=\"emphasis__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"emphasis__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"emphasis__figure\">20%:\u00a0Amount by which people in UK are less active than they were in the 1960s.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item__content-block item__content-block--markdown\">\n<p>The sedentary nature of modern, busy lives has been blamed &#8211; making it difficult for many to find the time for enough exercise to benefit their health.<\/p>\n<p>The figures &#8211; which have been drawn from evidence reviewed by PHE &#8211; come as it launches a new &#8216;One You&#8217; physical activity campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign is encouraging adults to build 10 minutes continuous brisk walking into their day as a simple way to improve their health. This is particularly aimed at those who have an inactive or low activity lifestyle and may find incorporating activity into their day challenging.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe free app combines walking intensity and time, rather than just distance or steps and is the first free app to do so. It\u2019s simple to use and incorporates behaviour change principles to help make brisk walking a daily habit.<\/p>\n<p>It also helps people gradually introduce more activity into their routine with goal setting advice and motivational tips, and it is great to see that 50,000 people have already downloaded it.\u201d Rob Copeland, Professor of Physical Activity and Health at Sheffield Hallam University and Director of NCSEM Sheffield<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/oneyou\/active10\/home\" target=\"_blank\">Active 10\u2019 app<\/a>\u00a0has been developed to show how much brisk walking a person is doing each day and how to incorporate more of it into their lifestyles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item__content-block item__content-block--emphasis\">\n<div class=\"emphasis__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"emphasis__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"emphasis__figure\">One:\u00a0Just one brisk 10 minute walk a day can reduce the risk of early death by 15%<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item__content-block item__content-block--quote newsapp-icon newsapp-icon-ui_icon-15\">\n<div class=\"quote\">\n<div class=\"quote__content\">\n<blockquote><p>We know that 27 per cent of adults in the East of England are achieving less than 30 minutes of physical activity per week. We also know that inactivity can lead to a whole host of health implications.<\/p>\n<p>But simply incorporating regular 10 minute brisk walks into everyone\u2019s day can make a world of difference to both health, as well as general wellbeing.
