Featuring bitesize lectures from leading academics across the University, the evening will explore Sheffield Hallam’s pioneering research in biosciences and computing, supported by The Antics; resident improv troupe at Sheffield’s Montgomery Theatre and Edinburgh Fringe regulars.<\/p>\n

Introduced by Professor Wayne Cranton, Dean of Research, Laughter Hours will be a whistle-stop tour of some of Sheffield Hallam’s most exciting research, delivered by the academics leading the way. No scientific knowledge required; just a spark of curiosity!<\/p>\n

What a pain in the back!<\/strong> – Professor Christine Le Maitre<\/a><\/p>\n

Did you know 8 in 10 of us will have back pain at some point in our lives and is the leading cause of pain and discomfort worldwide? Around 40% of low back pain is caused by defects in the movable structures in your spine known as spinal discs. Prof Le Maitre’s research looks into what causes these defects, and how we can use cells and gels to restore normal function and potentially cure low back pain resulting from these defects in the future.<\/p>\n

Virtual Reality: How engaging content can aid rehabilitation and reduce pain<\/strong> – Ivan Phelan<\/a><\/p>\n

While Virtual Reality technology is still in its relative infancy, it’s rapidly becoming a mass-market device. While the main market for VR is currently entertainment, an area that is developing is its use within a healthcare setting. This talk explores Ivan’s research into VR’s potential to improve rehabilitation techniques and support patients during painful treatments.<\/p>\n

Fingerprints reveal more than you think\u2026<\/strong> – Professor Simona Francese<\/a><\/p>\n

Do you ever, during a romantic dinner, stop and think “I have left my fingerprints all over my wine glass!” or when you visit friends, are you ever worried about leaving a little piece of you behind on every surface that you touch? If the answer is no, you may want to re-think it, unless, of course, you have nothing to hide! This talk will take you on a roller coaster journey within the invisible world of fingerprints and their power to reveal your secrets in a touch.<\/p>\n
