Online Student Induction to SHF

Robert Winston Building

Part one

Introduction

The Simulated Healthcare Facility (SHF) is designed to provide you with a safe, controlled and supportive environment in which you can study and practice before entering the healthcare world. RWB -entranceAreas are designed to replicate specific healthcare settings allowing you to gain valuable hands-on experience and to develop skills and knowledge through simulated exercises.

This induction is aimed at all new users of the SHF. It has been designed to provide information that is essential for the safe and effective use of the facilities, and provides information on how to use and maintain the high standards. Effective timetabling, maintenance, etiquette and security are the responsibility of all users of the area.

Access to the Simulated Healthcare Facility

The facility is open from 8.30am – 5pm, Monday – Thursday and 8.30am – 4.30pm on Friday.

SHUCard_new
You must carry your student ID card (SHU/Learning Centre card) at all times. Not only does it provide access to the building, but you may also be approached at any time by security/staff to provide identification. Each person’s card has access times programmed into it. Some students (particularly those that are part-time) may need access to the building after ‘normal working hours’. If this is the case, your card will be programmed as appropriate.
On no account should you give your card to anyone else, allow access to people unknown to you or leave doors open. All areas are normally locked unless in use (room bookings for student practice are between the hours of 8.30am and 6pm).
Please note that access can not be given to students unless the room has been timetabled accordingly by your tutor. In many of the areas, a member of staff also needs to be present. The photograph on your SHU card will also be used on your placement ID badge.

Layout

The SHF occupies the first, second, third and fourth floors of the Robert Winston Building (RWB), Woodville Teaching Block (WTB), Oak Lodge and #48 Collegiate Crescent. It offers both clinical, non-clinical and community based areas to provide a multi-user, interdisciplinary work space. All specialist rooms in RWB and WTB have a ‘teaching wall’ which has PC, DVD/Blu-Ray player, plasma screen TV and internet access.

The facility is divided into a number of different areas which are accessible to all health professions, with the exception of the digital X-ray suite (F343) which has some restrictions and is prioritised for diagnostic and therapeutic radiography.

The following will provide you with more information about specialist room

Part three

Dress code

There is no strict dress code within the facility, however, students are expected to dress appropriately for the sessions they are attending. All students are required to be ‘bare below the elbow’ which is also applicable in all NHS Trusts. Some sessions may have a practical element and it is wise to be prepared for these.

Physiotherapy students are advised to have shorts and a t-shirt (strappy t-shirt for the girls) with them at all times. Although we have numerous anatomical models and skeletons available there is no substitute for practice of skills on each other. This can only be achieved by having access to the appropriate body part.
Nursing and Midwifery students are requested to observe the following dress requirements for practical sessions including Life Support and Moving and Handling Sessions. To wear flat shoes that cover the whole foot – as per uniform requirements in practice. To dress appropriately to take part in moving and handling activities and life support activities. This means students would be better wearing trousers for practical sessions especially moving and handling.
uniforms
Appropriate dress and behaviour goes beyond shorts and a t-shirt. Baseball caps, jewellery (smooth wedding rings and ear studs are accepted), long fingernails, varnished nails, chewing gum and eating and drinking in sessions is not tolerated. Use common sense and consider modesty and comfort in practical sessions. Hair and any facial hair will need to be kept tidy. If hair is sufficiently long enough to fall over the face when performing a practical skill, please have some method of tying it back.(If for any personal issues you feel you can not comply with these requests, then please speak to your personal tutor).

Uniforms and name badges

You will be fitted for uniforms during your first year. These are free of charge and will be available for collection, along with your name badge, before your first clinical placement. You will be expected to wear your uniform whilst on clinical placement and may also be requested to wear it for some practical sessions and examinations.

If you lose your uniform or require more than your allocated number, you can purchase additional ones directly from the manufacturer at the same price paid by the university (plus P&P).

Please note that if you withdraw from the course at any point you will be required to return your allocated uniform and name badge to the university.
We will provide ODP students with theatre footwear and an reduced number of tunics and trousers, your clinical placement will provide you with scrubs. For Paramedic students, part of your uniform will be issued by the university and your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by your placement area.

If you have any queries regarding your uniform please contact Technical Resources in F306 or telephone 0114 225 2208.

Part four

Professional conduct

You are expected to behave professionally at all times. The equipment and its use present potential hazards that are not normally found in the classroom environment. The equipment provided to enhance your education and training is expensive and therefore must not be used without a trained member of staff present. Please be careful and cautious when practising within the facility. Remember that our simulated patients, be that full body or task trainer, are provided to simulate a patient, therefore do not do anything to them that you would not do to a patient.

Full compliance with all health safety rules, requirements (e.g. suitable clothing and/or Personal Protective Equipment) and procedures is a pre-requisite for entry and remaining in any practical area, lack of compliance will be considered as a professional suitability issue. In some areas a separate induction session may be required before entering or being granted access.

General behaviour / conduct

The facility is a very busy area which requires precise adherence to timetabling, preparation of the areas and return of all equipment to its exact place. Please treat the SHF areas and its equipment with care and ensure that it is kept clean and tidy.

Waste disposal

Clinical waste (non-sharps) should be disposed of in yellow bio-hazard sacks for disposal by incineration. All non-clinical waste should be disposed of in the general waste bins.

Medication / drugs
