On the lookout for vegan/vegetarian food in Sheffield

By Jess Brown, BA (Hons) Graphic Design and Illustration

I love a good sandwich. Great ingredients in between slices of nice soft fluffy bread. Salad and maybe whack a spread or chutney on there too. However, I’m also a vegetarian (most of the time a vegan due to lactose intolerance) which a lot of the time limits my options in most supermarket meal deals. I can either have onion bhajis or falafel with hummus. Even as an indian kid, cold, dry onion bhajis in bread bores me. I want fresh ingredients, fresh bhajis, and fresh falafel! FRESH GOOD FOOD! Maybe even some fake meat product in there too.

A lot of new students will be starting uni soon and thinking ‘where can I go to get vegetarian/vegan food in Sheffield?’ So, here are my top picks for meat free food places around the city!

  1. Wildwood – Offering both meat-based dishes, vegetarian food and vegan options, not to mention also being a store with great nature themed gifts, Wildwood is a lovely little cafe/shop just off The Moor. They offer these custom artisan subs that are just divine, I honestly had the best sandwich I’ve ever had in my life. I recommend the falafel with mixed leaves, sun-dried tomatoes, red onion, roasted red peppers, chilli jam, and mayonnaise on rosemary ciabatta. It is the absolute bomb.
  2. Couch – Couch is a good place to go and relax with a coffee or a slice of cake after uni. They sometimes do really good vegan pancakes. I say sometimes because the menu often goes through changes to keep things fresh, but any new additions I’ve tried have been delicious.
  3. Tamper Coffee – Tamper is one of these busy places for busy people. Lots of options for great breakfasts and lunches. This is another one that sometimes changes the menu but it’s a good atmosphere with friendly staff and really good food. They also have some nice vegan cookies and cupcakes!
  4. Dana Cafe – Located in Crookes, this little cafe is wonderful. It does a real mean tempeh bacon sandwich that I always get when me and my family visit. Really nice atmosphere and Crookes is a lovely area to explore too.
  5. Tabby Teas Cat Cafe – Cats. Cats. Cats. Not the musical, actual real cats that you can pet whilst eating a cookie. I don’t need to elaborate.

These are just a few of the many places you can find vegetarian/vegan food in Sheffield. I find the Sheffield Vegans and Vegetarians Facebook page really helpful for finding new recipes, shops, products, and restaurants that cater for my needs. It’s also a great way to meet like-minded people who are passionate about the environment, animals, and good food.
