Great places to go in and around Sheffield this summer

Forge Dam and Whiteley Woods

Having recently visited Forge Dam, I keep recommending it to all my friends. Choose a sunny day and you’ll find a lush little walk. I went over bank holiday weekend with my boyfriend. Exploring around Forge Dam, we found an area with really pretty flower bushes – it was the perfect spot for a picnic and to sunbathe too. We are hoping to go again soon so that so that we can explore more of Whiteley Woods too, and find the stepping stones over a little waterfall that my boyfriend remembers from his childhood.

Peak District

I have never had a bad day going to the Peak District, whether it’s a trip to nearby Castleton to climb Mam Tor and grab an ice cream in the village, or an exploration around Eyam to learn about the plague, or a wander around Chatsworth, or to eat dessert in Bakewell – there is so much to do and so much to see. Plan a day trip, grab a few friends, pack a picnic, and whether you go on the bus or by car you will not regret it!

Graves Park

I had to include a recommendation from my boyfriend as Graves Park is a place he hopes to show me soon and one I look forward to visiting. Located in the south west of the City Graves Park hosts a café and an animal farm, along with a range of sporting facilities, nature trails, a fishing lake, woodlands and plenty of open space. Another great place to go for a wander, a picnic or a chillax in the sun. Also a good place for children too if you have children or younger siblings and want a family day out.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park

I went to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park with a group of friends back in my first year at Sheffield Hallam. You can either get there from Sheffield via public transport or by driving. You can never go wrong with animals and at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park you can see meerkats, camels, polar bears and so much more. I can’t wait to go again!

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

Though not a place I have been to yet, this one is definitely high up on my to-do list to visit. Twenty minutes from the city centre by car, the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is an 18th Century Victorian Village that was once responsible for the production of steel scythes. The attraction features warehouses, workers’ cottages, water wheels, and the UK’s last intact crucible steel furnace, and sounds simply fascinating.
