DESCRIPTION:Sheffield Hallam User Experience (SHUX) is a community of practice designed to bring together staff and students who have an interest in user experience (UX) and user-centred design. It provides a forum for individuals to share their knowledge\, expertise and resources. \nTo celebrate the launch of SHUX\, we will be holding a free event\, open to staff and students. This will be on Wednesday 6th November\, 1.00 pm – 5.00 pm in Charles Street building. The event gives staff from across the university opportunities to share their UX experience and knowledge. There will be a general introduction to user experience and practical activities for participants to try a number of techniques\, so don’t be put off if you’re totally new to UX or only just getting started. \nPlease note: we don’t have any catering for the afternoon of the 6th\, but feel free to bring your own hot drinks and snacks along with you. SUMMARY:Equity across the student life cycle: lessons from Australia
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 16th September\, Dr Andrew Harvey from La Trobe will be visiting Sheffield Hallam.  Andrew is the Director of the Centre for Higher Education Equity and Diversity Research at La Trobe and has published widely in areas of higher education policy\, including student equity\, admissions\, retention\, and globalisation.  For more information please access https://scholars.latrobe.edu.au/display/acharvey and https://www.latrobe.edu.au/cheedr. \nYou are warmly invited to his lunchtime seminar at 12.30-2pm on the following topic areas: \nEquity across the student life cycle: lessons from Australia. \nThe seminar will explore research undertaken by CHEEDR/La Trobe related to equity across the university student life cycle. Many groups remain under-represented in Australian higher education\, including Indigenous students and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. The seminar will explore the impact of secondary school streaming on higher education participation\, as well as recent efforts to broaden access for groups such as care leavers\, people from refugee backgrounds\, and military veterans. Retention and completion rates also remain uneven. Research reveals a need to broaden access to co-curricular activities\, effectively employ learning analytics\, and establish campus climates in which student diversity is harnessed and cultural safety ensured. Equally\, graduate outcomes are inequitable and remain relatively poor for groups such as students with a disability and new migrants. DESCRIPTION:The Teaching Research Methods Forum is organised by the Research Methods @ SHU Hallam Guild group\, and is open to anyone involved in dissertation supervision or teaching research methods at any level. The forum provides an opportunity for members to meet together to discuss common challenges and share approaches to the design and delivery of research-focused teaching. \nThe theme of the next forum is ‘Encouraging Students to Engage with Research’. In this session\, we will discuss the techniques we use to make research methods more engaging to students\, how we might communicate the importance of research\, and ways to highlight the transferrable skills (and resulting employability outcomes) that learning about research will help students to develop. \nThe format of the sessions will be mostly informal discussion\, but if you would be interested in giving a short presentation to the group (approx 5-10 minutes) about any aspect of your research methods teaching at one of the upcoming events\, please get in touch. \nFuture themes will include: \n\nDesigning generic research methods modules\nTeaching research ethics\nSupporting students with literature reviews\nHelping students to identify researchable questions\nAssessment of research methods modules\nEngaging students with statistics\nUsing examples and case studies\nUsing innovative approaches (e.g. games)\nSupervising dissertations\n\nTea and coffee will be provided\, and feel free to bring your lunch along with you. SUMMARY:STUDENT TRANSITIONS TO HIGHER EDUCATION
DESCRIPTION:Co-creating Enhanced Transitions: \nThis seminar will consider the outcomes of a project that has researched the challenges encountered by students entering higher education from further education institutions across different disciplines. It will detail aspects of practice that supports students both before and during their transition\, and how this support can continue at University. The key themes that will be shared and discussed during the seminar include the students’ sense of belonging\, the importance of peer and mentor support; the personal context\, including previous educational experience\, and the development of reflective practice to aid the transition to independent learning. The seminar will end with a facilitated discussion to elicit contributions from the audience. DESCRIPTION:Charmaine Myers (Venture Matrix) \nFrom Academic Content to Professional Practice in an hour: A discipline-specific teaching & learning model to support employability and\, potentially\, its assessment: \nThe employability of undergraduates continues to be the focus for the H.E sector. A particular challenge for non-vocational courses is how do we assist learners to link\, often abstract concepts from their discipline area\, to professional practice in the world of work? \nAn on-line transition model has been developed to give new H.E learners an authentic context to a topic from their subject discipline\, supplemented with a selection of authentic tasks to apply this knowledge while drawing on their own experiences.  Finally\, the link to professional practice is provided through video interviews of professionals who put the topic into a real-world context. This session will focus on how the model can help design assessment for employability. Participants will be invited to explore what such an assessment might look like within their own discipline.

I can be seen as being in a privileged position as being a practitioner/researcher gives me access to resources that an outsider researcher would not have. However\, the role of a practitioner/researcher comes with responsibilities not only to the organisation in which I am employed but also to my research participants who are also my colleagues”. \nI am most often positioned as an ‘insider’ within my research\, I can draw on shared understanding and contexts\, ‘trust’ becomes a key word and therefore the ethical considerations of researching within a work-based context are paramount. In this session I want to offer you an insight into two different research methodologies\, Appreciative Inquiry (AI) and Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) that I have used for work-based research. I want to explore why I believe these two methods are appropriate and to consider the ethics related to their use. You will be undertaking some activities related to both of these methodologies. \n

DESCRIPTION:Dear Hallam Guild Group members \n  \nFollowing suggestions raised during the RM@SHU launch event in February\, and the first Steering Group meeting on 12th April\, we are delighted to announce the introduction of a series of events with a focus on the design and delivery of research methods teaching. The Teaching Research Methods Forum will be a bi-monthly event which will provide an opportunity for members who are involved in methods-focused teaching and/or dissertation supervision at all levels to meet together to discuss common challenges and share approaches to encouraging student engagement with research. \n  \nThe first Teaching Research Methods Forum will be on Friday 7th June 2019\, 12 pm in Owen 1031. The main meeting will take place 12-1 pm\, and tea/coffee will be provided. DESCRIPTION:The Roland Barthes Reading group extends to host a more public event\, which one might call a symposium or a convivium\, but perhaps it is closer to a masterclass\, albeit one without mastery (or a class unmastered). We seek to avoid a keynote speaker\, but invite one nonetheless\, ANNE BOYER\, and the more hierarchical structure of a conference\, instead developing something that arises in or from the situation of encounter. This will be an event of readings\, rehearsed or impromptu\, formed in advance in response to a text (Roland Barthes\, of course\, wherever we have reached in our reading of The Preparation of the Novel)\, in response to our guest\, her work\, other guests\, their work\, our work\, and in response to the place of reading. If following the model of ancient Greece\, one may think of works (which some might call literary) taking place in the scene of reading\, central to its pleasure. \n

DESCRIPTION:As part of the EU CultureLabs research project\, a local team of researchers at SHU are organising a workshop held on the 22nd of May at the City Campus of Sheffield Hallam University.  \nCultureLabs is a European project funded under Horizon2020 (2018-2021). Working collaboratively across six countries\, it aims to support Cultural Heritage Institutions\, Non-Governmental Organisations\, public administrations and other actors who wish to organise participatory projects aiming at social inclusion via interaction with cultural heritage.  \nAs migrant communities are a primary focus of the project\, we are seeking individuals based in Sheffield who have experience in tackling issues with migration and migrant communities.  \nThe workshop will focus on gathering professional feedback on four participatory projects that the project is working on and that are aimed at achieving social innovation through cultural heritage-based activities. People that are subscribed to this mailing list are therefore invited to participate in our co-creation activities (which will include presentations from the projects organisers as well as role-playing activities) taking place on the morning of the 22nd of May from 9:30 AM to 1 PM to provide their comments and feedback\, and also to learn more about the project and meet our team. \nTravel costs will be covered by the project organiser. Participants will also be invited to join the CultureLabs team for lunch at the Ambulo restaurant\, located inside the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield. Selected participants in the workshop will be rewarded with a £20 voucher for their time. \nAs places are limited\, the workshop organisers will select the participants based on their background and expertise. DESCRIPTION:The distance learning guild group\, aims to provide a space for all staff involved or interested in online distance learning to network with colleagues across Professional Services\, Faculties and subject disciplines.   \n\nTo explore what a consistently outstanding student experience might look and feel like if you were a learner within this digital space.\nThis guild group are very keen to share what’s currently happening (with your help!) using case studies and staff accounts\, but also to ask what we could do differently to offer a distinct curriculum and applicant to graduate experience via online distance learning. \n\nThis first event will invite colleagues to share their teaching and learning experiences\, consider student experiences of the university as a distance learner and find out from attendees how we can create at network for establishing a consistently outstanding online learning experience.

SUMMARY:EAP/TESOL Yorkshire Networking and Dissemination Event
DESCRIPTION:The aim of EAP/TESOL Yorkshire is to: \n 1) create a hub for EAP/TESOL research in the Yorkshire region \n2) share knowledge and practice in EAP/TESOL \n3) develop cross-institutional research projects \n4) induct MA students into the wider EAP/TESOL research and professional culture \nThis event will focus primarily on the skill of reading\, looking in particular at different methods of investigating reading. The day will include research presentations as well as opportunities for discussion and networking\, and a display of students’ research posters. DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning for the year\, the EthicsIR Hallam Guild Group has been chatting to colleagues from across the university who are engaging in institutional research and evaluation (inc pedagogic research\, evaluation of interventions\, student and staff surveys etc).  We have been sharing our ethical dilemmas and facilitating support to enhance institutional practices.  If you would like to come and talk to the group leads (Liz Austen\, Liz Chitwood and Stella Jones-Devitt) about any ethical dilemma relating to institutional research and evaluation please drop in to see us.  We can provide support with decisions about seeking ethical approval\, ethical sampling approaches\, incentivising student engagement/responses rates and much more!
