SUMMARY:Transition Model Toolkit Launch
DESCRIPTION:It is widely acknowledged that the employability of undergraduates is a contemporary focus and measure for the higher education sector. Sheffield Hallam have the ambition to become the world’s leading applied university and to develop our students for their future success. Therefore\, this theoretically informed but pragmatic approach has been developed to give new Sheffield Hallam learners an authentic context to a topic from their subject discipline\, supplemented with a selection of authentic tasks to apply this knowledge while drawing on their own experiences with these activities mirroring approaches of applied learning (Beard 2010; Herrington et al\, 2014; Kolb\, 1984). Finally\, the link to professional practice is provided through video interviews of professionals and current sandwich placement students\, who put the topic into a real-world context. This approach is delivered via an on-line pre arrival Blackboard site which is supported by a comprehensive on-line toolkit that is aimed to support course teams through the practical steps of building their own discipline-specific site. \nThe virtual session will focus on the pedagogy behind the model\, a demonstration of the pre–arrival sites in practice and a chance for you to discuss how the site could be Implemented within your discipline area.

SUMMARY:Working with administrative and government data
DESCRIPTION:The Hallam Guild Group Research Methods @SHU has just launched monthly ‘Ideas Incubator’ sessions. These are informal lunchtime meetings for SHU staff members designed to support staff\, particularly those who do not have extensive research experience in developing their research. We aim to create a friendly space to share best practice and talk to other researchers from a variety of disciplines. We would like to invite staff from all SHU faculties who are interested in research methods or the research process to come and chat to others\, and receive peer advice and feedback on potential ideas or work in progress. Whether you are a new or experienced researcher\, please bring your lunch and join us. There will be no formal presentations\, just a friendly group of researchers to talk to. If you have any questions\, would like to suggest a theme or even host a future ‘ideas incubator’ in your Department\, please drop Dr. Lada Price an email: lada [dot] price [at] shu [dot] ac [dot] uk

SUMMARY:Spark! Staff Disability Network - Deaf Awareness & Communication Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, Deaf Awareness Week this year has fallen at a time where the University is closed\, and social distancing measures are still in place. The Spark! Staff Disability Network had planned to hold a social event with live talks about Deaf Awareness and Deaf History\, and with the opportunity to learn some basic British Sign Language (BSL). However\, we have been able to move the majority of this online. \nOn Wednesday 6th May we are hosting an online webinar on Deaf Awareness and Communication covering the key points when communicating with someone deaf or hard of hearing including a Q&A session at the end. All participants will receive an email before the webinar including a link to the Google Meet session (please note that Google Meet is best accessed using Google Chrome rather than other web browsers such as Edge\, Safari\, etc.). \nResources are also being developed for our blog and will be uploaded after the event: https://blogs.shu.ac.uk/sdn/2020/04/29/deaf-awareness-week-4-11-may/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:An Afternoon with Artist\, Illustrator and Mental Health Advocate Chris Sav
DESCRIPTION:After gaining a BA Hons in Fine Art from Southampton Solent University Chris Sav found himself unemployed. \nDuring this time he started Disapppointman\, a weekly comic that focuses on men’s mental health issues using comedy and relatable situations.  \n \n  \nCALM began publishing Disappointman\, which led him to have multiple commissions for his songwriting and illustrations including; Rethink Mental Illness\, British Hip Hop duo Adam and Cuth\, and the Urban Orchard Project. \nHis musical comedy act Chris and the Celeriac has also played at the Green Man Festival and has been featured on radio 6 Music.  \nHe continues to explore mental health issues and the stigma surrounding them through his creative outputs\, which include attempts to start his boy band and outlandish performances featuring a fish-man who can’t swim as well as his illustrations.  \nHis talk in Adsetts Library will be focusing on how he has used cartoons and comedy to understand and deal with his mental health\, and how highlighting the absurdity of everyday life can make it easier to live with.  \n

SUMMARY:Sheffield Hallam User Experience (SHUX) launch event
DESCRIPTION:Sheffield Hallam User Experience (SHUX) is a community of practice designed to bring together staff and students who have an interest in user experience (UX) and user-centred design. It provides a forum for individuals to share their knowledge\, expertise and resources. \nTo celebrate the launch of SHUX\, we will be holding a free event\, open to staff and students. This will be on Wednesday 6th November\, 1.00 pm – 5.00 pm in Charles Street building. The event gives staff from across the university opportunities to share their UX experience and knowledge. There will be a general introduction to user experience and practical activities for participants to try a number of techniques\, so don’t be put off if you’re totally new to UX or only just getting started. \nPlease note: we don’t have any catering for the afternoon of the 6th\, but feel free to bring your own hot drinks and snacks along with you. All registered participants will leave with a goody bag filled with UX supplies. To secure your place\, please register now

SUMMARY:Equity across the student life cycle: lessons from Australia
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 16th September\, Dr Andrew Harvey from La Trobe will be visiting Sheffield Hallam.  Andrew is the Director of the Centre for Higher Education Equity and Diversity Research at La Trobe and has published widely in areas of higher education policy\, including student equity\, admissions\, retention\, and globalisation.  For more information please access https://scholars.latrobe.edu.au/display/acharvey and https://www.latrobe.edu.au/cheedr. \nYou are warmly invited to his lunchtime seminar at 12.30-2pm on the following topic areas: \nEquity across the student life cycle: lessons from Australia. \nThe seminar will explore research undertaken by CHEEDR/La Trobe related to equity across the university student life cycle. Many groups remain under-represented in Australian higher education\, including Indigenous students and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. The seminar will explore the impact of secondary school streaming on higher education participation\, as well as recent efforts to broaden access for groups such as care leavers\, people from refugee backgrounds\, and military veterans. Retention and completion rates also remain uneven. Research reveals a need to broaden access to co-curricular activities\, effectively employ learning analytics\, and establish campus climates in which student diversity is harnessed and cultural safety ensured. Equally\, graduate outcomes are inequitable and remain relatively poor for groups such as students with a disability and new migrants. The seminar will highlight the likely effect of proposed performance-based funding policies on equity\, and the need for targeted employability strategies. \n  \nWe hope that this session will provide useful insights which we can apply to our own access and participation context. \n  \nTo register for this event please use this Eventbrite link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dr-andrew-harvey-latrobe-guest-seminar-equity-across-the-student-life-cycle-lessons-from-australia-tickets-66654518459 \nPlease do advertise this event through your own internal networks and with your students.  We look forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:Staff Development Day – Assessment Behaviours & Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Applied clinical assessments are widely used across the Nursing & Midwifery and Allied Health Departments at both UG and PG levels. As someone involved in practical clinical assessments we would like to invite you to a staff development day designed to evaluate our current practice and consider approaches to practical assessments which may enhance our practice. \n\nAndrew Coleman\, an external speaker with an extensive background in practical assessment will be facilitating the event. Please see Andrew’s Biography here. Andrew has asked if staff would willing share any films of practical assessments they have to provide context and inform conversations on the day. If you are happy to provide any films could you please add this to the notes section when you book through eventbrite. It would also be useful if you could provide some information about any particular issues you would like to look at.

SUMMARY:Compassion in HE group
DESCRIPTION: Please join us for Show and Tell on 5th of July. \nAs part of the session we are planning to give you an example of what it is like to take part in a learning set. \nI will provide a brief introduction to action learning at the start of the session. \nWe hope that a further two or three colleagues are able to bring and share how they are developing or using compassion as part of their work with students and or colleagues. We know you are trying to improve what you do as a matter of course and if that is the case you are who we are looking for. \nSo if you are developing or want to improve aspects of compassion we are looking for your input: you will have the opportunity to provide a brief overview of what you are doing and how you are doing this. The other attendees will then have the opportunity to ask questions that hopefully help you to come up with ideas to further develop what you are doing. \n  \nKind regards \nPetra Klompenhouwer\, Cathy Malone\, Sally Hinchcliff \n

SUMMARY:From Academic Content to Professional Practice in an hour
DESCRIPTION:Charmaine Myers (Venture Matrix) \nFrom Academic Content to Professional Practice in an hour: A discipline-specific teaching & learning model to support employability and\, potentially\, its assessment: \nThe employability of undergraduates continues to be the focus for the H.E sector. A particular challenge for non-vocational courses is how do we assist learners to link\, often abstract concepts from their discipline area\, to professional practice in the world of work? \nAn on-line transition model has been developed to give new H.E learners an authentic context to a topic from their subject discipline\, supplemented with a selection of authentic tasks to apply this knowledge while drawing on their own experiences.  Finally\, the link to professional practice is provided through video interviews of professionals who put the topic into a real-world context. This session will focus on how the model can help design assessment for employability. Participants will be invited to explore what such an assessment might look like within their own discipline.

SUMMARY:EthicsIR Un-Conference
DESCRIPTION:EthicsIR will be host an EthicsIR Un-Conference\, held at the HUBS on Wednesday 12th June 12.30-3pm. \nAll attendees will receive an EthicsIR booklet of resources which will support future institutional research and evaluation at Hallam. Refreshments and pastries will also be provided. \n12.30-12.45 – Introduction to EthicsIR Unconference – refreshments and pastries – booklet of resources available \n12.45 – 2.00 – ‘A duty of care – researching in a work-based context’ Megan\, Lawton\, Professor of Learning and Teaching in Academic Practice\, University of Wolverhampton (with time for Q&A) \n2.00 – 3.00 – Acting Ethically: Lesson Learnt for Institutional Research and Evaluation (Liz Austen\, Liz Chitwood and Stella Jones-Devitt – Hallam Guild Group Leads) \nMegan\, Lawton\, Professor of Learning and Teaching in Academic Practice  ‘A duty of care – researching in a work-based context’. \nI have been and would still class myself as a practitioner researcher. Below is an extra from my Doctorate that sets out some of my beliefs and professional values: \n“For my research I am not only a Doctoral practitioner/researcher student\, I am an academic in my discipline (learning and teaching); I am also an educational developer working with discipline-based staff on learning and teaching issues. I have a duty of care to my institution\, my department and to my discipline-based colleagues. It is within these different contexts that my research questions sit. I can be seen as being in a privileged position as being a practitioner/researcher gives me access to resources that an outsider researcher would not have. However\, the role of a practitioner/researcher comes with responsibilities not only to the organisation in which I am employed but also to my research participants who are also my colleagues”. \nI am most often positioned as an ‘insider’ within my research\, I can draw on shared understanding and contexts\, ‘trust’ becomes a key word and therefore the ethical considerations of researching within a work-based context are paramount. In this session I want to offer you an insight into two different research methodologies\, Appreciative Inquiry (AI) and Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) that I have used for work-based research. I want to explore why I believe these two methods are appropriate and to consider the ethics related to their use. You will be undertaking some activities related to both of these methodologies. \n
