SUMMARY:Safe Spaces
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted by the Academic Network for Women of Colour and the Hallam Race Network. \nGenerally the university has not been a safe space for historically underinvested groups. With the renewed and politicised focus on anti-racist practice\, we are increasingly encouraged to create ‘safe spaces’ in our offices and classrooms so that we can be more intentional about our conversations about race; but what is a safe space?  For whom is it safe? How do we create these spaces in our own practice? \nWith presentations by Dr Muna Abdi (Educational Consultant)\, Dr Shona Hunter (WhiteSpaces) and hosted by Dr Lindy-Ann Blaize Alfred – this conversation will discuss the idea of ‘safe spaces’ in order to promote a more critical engagement with what this means – and the implications for each of us within our own areas of control. \nRegister for the Safe Spaces event (Eventbrite)

SUMMARY:Telling your story: recognising your success
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 19th November 12.00 – 1.30pm  (online) \nThis event is hosted jointly by the Hallam Guild Teaching Excellence Network and the Principal/Senior Fellow Forum. \nWe are delighted to welcome Professor Sally Bradley from Advance HE who will present our Hallam Guild event: Telling your story: recognising your success. \nSally will encourage us to reflect on our strengths and achievements\, within Sheffield Hallam University and beyond.  But stopping there won’t take us forward.   So how can we use those achievements to gain recognition?  Sally will share how colleagues have used their stories to gain Senior and Principal Fellowships and how similar reflection can help develop applications for National Teaching Fellowships or the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence.  And if you have already achieved these\, then why not think about how you can use your experience to mentor colleagues? \nBio: Professor Sally Bradley\, Senior Adviser (Professional Learning and Development)\, Advance HE \nSally has worked for Advance HE\, formally the Higher Education Academy\, for the last 6 years\, initially as Academic Lead for HEA Fellowships and UKPSF. She has worked with more the 150 strategic leaders of learning and teaching on their professional development and the development of their Principal Fellowship applications. Sally is an experienced academic with 22 years of UK higher education and is an Institute of Leadership and Management qualified Executive Coach.  She holds an Honorary Professoriate from the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing at Sheffield Hallam University\, where she worked for 15 years. \nBook your place to receive joining instructions and the Zoom link for the event \nPlease direct any queries to: ! SUMMARY:Student-led assessment\, in an online or blended learning context
DESCRIPTION:This webinar\, led by Dr Simon Riley\, University of Edinburgh\, and based on his work\, will explore student-led assessment\, as part of Student-Led\, Individually-Created Courses (SLICCs). SLICCs provide students with a reflective experiential learning and assessment framework using an e-portfolio\, based around five generic learning outcomes [analysis\, application\, skills\, mindsets\, evaluation].  The framework is flexible – so from Foundation to Professional PhD\, for single students or groups\, for experiences that are proposed by students themselves or are offered by staff within a course structure\, for on or off campus\, or online – so whatever ‘hybrid’ is to you\, SLICCs should work!  SLICCs also offer students the opportunity to undertake projects on wicked problems\, where they are almost inevitably going to ‘fail’\, but by being able to understand their learning gains in a complex and uncertain environment\, they can still receive excellent assessment grades.  The session will consider the student-led developments and adaptations within the current Covid-19 restrictions\, and will invite participants to share and/or explore implications for assessed student employability projects and initiatives in the 2020/21 academic year.\nhttps://edin.ac/sliccs-resource-pack \n  \nSimon Riley is a Senior Lecturer in Edinburgh Medical School with a long-standing interest in experiential\, reflective and portfolio learning and assessment. In his secondee role at the Institute for Academic Development\, with SLICCs he is running a long-term project on how to effectively deliver this type of learning across this large institution\, at scale\, including how to enable inter-disciplinary working across school and college boundaries.

SUMMARY:Transition Model Toolkit Launch
DESCRIPTION:It is widely acknowledged that the employability of undergraduates is a contemporary focus and measure for the higher education sector. Sheffield Hallam have the ambition to become the world’s leading applied university and to develop our students for their future success. Therefore\, this theoretically informed but pragmatic approach has been developed to give new Sheffield Hallam learners an authentic context to a topic from their subject discipline\, supplemented with a selection of authentic tasks to apply this knowledge while drawing on their own experiences with these activities mirroring approaches of applied learning (Beard 2010; Herrington et al\, 2014; Kolb\, 1984). Finally\, the link to professional practice is provided through video interviews of professionals and current sandwich placement students\, who put the topic into a real-world context. This approach is delivered via an on-line pre arrival Blackboard site which is supported by a comprehensive on-line toolkit that is aimed to support course teams through the practical steps of building their own discipline-specific site. \nThe virtual session will focus on the pedagogy behind the model\, a demonstration of the pre–arrival sites in practice and a chance for you to discuss how the site could be Implemented within your discipline area.

SUMMARY:Working with administrative and government data
DESCRIPTION:The Hallam Guild Group Research Methods @SHU has just launched monthly ‘Ideas Incubator’ sessions. These are informal lunchtime meetings for SHU staff members designed to support staff\, particularly those who do not have extensive research experience in developing their research. We aim to create a friendly space to share best practice and talk to other researchers from a variety of disciplines. We would like to invite staff from all SHU faculties who are interested in research methods or the research process to come and chat to others\, and receive peer advice and feedback on potential ideas or work in progress. Whether you are a new or experienced researcher\, please bring your lunch and join us. There will be no formal presentations\, just a friendly group of researchers to talk to. If you have any questions\, would like to suggest a theme or even host a future ‘ideas incubator’ in your Department\, please drop Dr. Lada Price an email: lada [dot] price [at] shu [dot] ac [dot] uk

SUMMARY:Spark! Staff Disability Network - Deaf Awareness & Communication Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, Deaf Awareness Week this year has fallen at a time where the University is closed\, and social distancing measures are still in place. The Spark! Staff Disability Network had planned to hold a social event with live talks about Deaf Awareness and Deaf History\, and with the opportunity to learn some basic British Sign Language (BSL). However\, we have been able to move the majority of this online. \nOn Wednesday 6th May we are hosting an online webinar on Deaf Awareness and Communication covering the key points when communicating with someone deaf or hard of hearing including a Q&A session at the end. All participants will receive an email before the webinar including a link to the Google Meet session (please note that Google Meet is best accessed using Google Chrome rather than other web browsers such as Edge\, Safari\, etc.). \nResources are also being developed for our blog and will be uploaded after the event: https://blogs.shu.ac.uk/sdn/2020/04/29/deaf-awareness-week-4-11-may/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:An Afternoon with Artist\, Illustrator and Mental Health Advocate Chris Sav
DESCRIPTION:After gaining a BA Hons in Fine Art from Southampton Solent University Chris Sav found himself unemployed. \nDuring this time he started Disapppointman\, a weekly comic that focuses on men’s mental health issues using comedy and relatable situations.  \n \n  \nCALM began publishing Disappointman\, which led him to have multiple commissions for his songwriting and illustrations including; Rethink Mental Illness\, British Hip Hop duo Adam and Cuth\, and the Urban Orchard Project. \nHis musical comedy act Chris and the Celeriac has also played at the Green Man Festival and has been featured on radio 6 Music.  \nHe continues to explore mental health issues and the stigma surrounding them through his creative outputs\, which include attempts to start his boy band and outlandish performances featuring a fish-man who can’t swim as well as his illustrations.  \nHis talk in Adsetts Library will be focusing on how he has used cartoons and comedy to understand and deal with his mental health\, and how highlighting the absurdity of everyday life can make it easier to live with.  \n
