SUMMARY:PGR Wellbeing Group
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to invite you to the first meeting of the Hallam Guild Group on PGR Wellbeing. \nIt is widely acknowledged that postgraduate research (PGR) study presents a number of risk factors for students’ mental health and wellbeing – expectations of high academic achievement and imposter syndrome; the intensity of and dependence on the student-supervisor relationship; individualised study and feelings of isolation; the normalisation of stress and PGR study; and a perception that core University services are ‘not for PGRs’. Students who are part-time\, international or self-financing may face additional pressures. \nWe would like this group to be a cross-University community of staff and students with an interest in supporting the wellbeing of our PGR students. The group will enable the sharing of experience\, knowledge and skills with the aim of ensuring that our policies\, culture and practices support good mental health and wellbeing\, student satisfaction and academic achievement. \nThis will be an informal meeting where we will share some initial results from the Student Union’s recent PGR wellbeing survey\, outline our plans for a PGR wellbeing week in May\, and invite your input on the future priorities and activities of the group. \nPlease note we will not be providing refreshments but feel free to bring your lunch to the meeting. \nPlease book via Eventbrite \nWe hope to see you there\, and please forward this information to anyone else who may be interested \nBest wishes \nKathy Davies SHSU 2018 Postgraduate Student Rep and PhD Candidate in History\nElizabeth Scanlon Researcher Development Adviser\, Research and Innovation Office\nSarah Smith Doctoral School Manager\, Research and Innovation Office\nAlison Worsley Academic Representation Manager\, SHU Students’ Union \nIf you’re not able to attend this first meeting but would like to be part of the group\, please email doctoralschool [at] shu [dot] ac [dot] uk to register your interest. It would be helpful if you could include in your email:\n•	what you’d like to get from the group\, and anything specific you’d like to contribute\n•	what kind of events you’d be interested in attending

SUMMARY:Embedding and assessing the micro skills of compassion in student group work
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \nThe first meeting of the Hallam Guild Group – Compassion in Higher Education will be an opportunity to meet colleagues with an interest in this area from across the university\, and will also include Guest Speaker Theo Gilbert\, University of Hertfordshire (click here for Speaker Bio) \n‘Embedding and assessing the micro skills of compassion in student group work’ \nThis workshop will offer you fascinating background insights into what is happening in the science of compassion these days and why it has become a ‘must-watch’ space for educators everywhere. The workshop will explain some very practical\, compassionate micro skills for students (and staff) to bring to their group work/team work – in ways they may not have thought of before. Compassion can be defined as: noticing\, not normalising\, distress or disadvantaging of yourself or others – and doing something about it. We will have a chance to try some of these micro skills out together. We’ll see how quick and easy they are to teach\, support and assess. You will discover why they do not detract from but only sharpen students’ investment in their target subjects\, why they are helping to enhance student wellbeing/interculturalism – and how findings suggest they could help dismantle the institutionally-constructed aspects of the BAME attainment gap. \nRefreshments will be provided\, we look forward to seeing you there \nCathy Malone

SUMMARY:The Women in Academia Hallam Guild group
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to a double celebration: a network launch and a celebration of the work of Audre Lorde at: \nCelebration Event – Onyesha: Insider \nThis annual celebration event marks the 85th birthday of the late Audre Lorde\, Poet\, essayist\, and novelist born on February 18\, 1934\, in New York City. The title of the event takes inspiration from two sources – the Swahili word ‘onyesha’ which means ‘to show’ or ‘to reveal’ and is a take on one of Lourde’s seminal texts – Sister Outsider. \nNetwork Launch \nThe Academic Network for Women of Colour (ANetWoC) aims to develop a community of practice which not only supports the emotional\, professional and intellectual development of women of colour – especially new staff and staff new to teaching in HE\, but also aims to progress and navigate the institutions thinking about race by feeding into initiatives and policies both institutional and sector wide. \nPlease join us for an evening of poetry\, spoken word and film. Details to follow \nTickets for the event are available via Eventbrite. \nContact: Lindy-Ann Blaize Alfred \n

SUMMARY:CoPE (Community of Philosophical Enquiry) Hallam Guild Group
DESCRIPTION:If you want to increase and deepen your student’s participation and engagement in seminars\, then this Hallam Guild group may be for you. CoPE is a learner-centered and inquiry-based dialogical pedagogy that creates a space for meaningful and authentic interactions. SUMMARY:EthicsIR (Hallam Guild Group) Un-Launch
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to the Un-Launch event for the Hallam Guild Group ‘EthicsIR’.  This group aims to increase awareness and understanding of the ethical principles involved in designing and conducting institutional research/evaluation at Hallam\, especially work with students.  Institutional research (IR) is “evidence driven approaches to decision making within organisations. Effective IR requires strategically relevant sources of reliable data which are embedded within the organisation. IR therefore includes research or evaluation conducted by staff or students on their own organisation” (Austen 2018).  In our context this includes the generation of student data\, institutional surveys\, pedagogic research and educational research/evaluation concerning student experiences in HE (e.g. Hallam Guild Projects).  This group is co-led by three institutional researchers at Hallam: Liz Austen (STEER)\, Stella Jones-Devitt (STEER) and Liz Chitwood (Students Union). \nWe hope to create a collaborative group of staff and students who are interesting in exploring and responding to ethical dilemmas in our everyday institutional research practices in a supportive and appreciative environment.  This Group will develop in response to the thoughts and ideas of its members.  This first open meeting (Un-Launch) is an opportunity to find out more about the scope of the Group and plans for the programme of work.  During the event you will also consider ethical dilemmas in institutional research\, and are encouraged to bring your own! \nThis Group is hopefully of interest to all staff (academic and professional services) and students who are engaged in research.  Please spread the word and let your friends and colleagues know! Refreshments will be provided. \nFollow us on Twitter @EthicsIR or visit our webpage for more details. \n

SUMMARY:20-Minute ‘The Micro Skills of Compassion in the Classroom’ Webinars
DESCRIPTION:All webinars are offered free of charge through SDSU Zoom – https://SDSU.zoom.us/j/781586558  \nEach Webinar will begin promptly at 12 noon (pacific time)/8pm (GMT)  on each date indicated.\nEach webinar will be recorded and shared for future reference at http://rushingtoyoga.org/?page_id=286\, where the free book with additional resources can be obtained.  \nEach webinar will be no more than 20 minutes in length with 10 additional minutes for live questions and comments.\n\nWebinar 1: The Micro Ethnography of Compassion in University Student Group/Team Work  \nJanuary 24\, 2019 – Theo Gilbert \nTheo Gilbert introduces this series of 6 webinars on progress with training staff and students in the micro skills of compassion for group/team work.  Compassion can be defined as: Noticing (not normalizing) distress and/or disadvantaging of others or oneself –  and doing something (smart) about it.  He explains qualitative and statistical outcomes (of making these skills credit bearing on degree curricula) for students’ personal well-being and academic achievement\, in studies conducted so far. Demonstrated in this 21 minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jFVTCuSCOg\, this kind of teaching is a response to the international crisis in student wellbeing and mental health\, and statistically\,  it appears\,  in studies so far to remove (not reduce) the BAME attainment gap compared to controls. \nAfter this session\, all following sessions in this webinar series will be delivered by a different educator and/or researcher – each month:   speakers from the universities of Aberdeen\, Exeter\, Hertfordshire\, Derby and Anglia Ruskin will explain their experience\, tips and outcomes of embedding the micro skills of compassion into their own student group work –   in Business\, the Humanities\, in Nursing and Psychology respectively. There will also be a speaker on the current development of an affordable Virtual Reality simulation for training staff and students in the micro skills of compassion. \nThese webinars are to provide a rich demonstration of collective encouragement and practical back-up for any educator wanting to try out these easily-taught micro skills. All the skills are underpinned by recent findings in neuroscience\, clinical psychology\, ethnography and group psychotherapy. \nDr. Theo Gilbert SFHEA is part of a network of staff from\, so far\, 42 universities in the UK and elsewhere\, who are engaging with the above approach to group/team work for staff and students. (To join\, go to: https://compassioninhe.wordpress.com/contact/ ). He is an Associate Professor of Teaching and Learning at the University of Hertfordshire\, UK;  and recipient of the Times Higher Education’s Most Innovative Teacher of 2018” award.  t [dot] 1 [dot] gilbert [at] herts [dot] ac [dot] uk @theogilbert
