DESCRIPTION:Dear Hallam Guild Group members \n  \nFollowing suggestions raised during the RM@SHU launch event in February\, and the first Steering Group meeting on 12th April\, we are delighted to announce the introduction of a series of events with a focus on the design and delivery of research methods teaching. The Teaching Research Methods Forum will be a bi-monthly event which will provide an opportunity for members who are involved in methods-focused teaching and/or dissertation supervision at all levels to meet together to discuss common challenges and share approaches to encouraging student engagement with research. \n  \nThe first Teaching Research Methods Forum will be on Friday 7th June 2019\, 12 pm in Owen 1031. The main meeting will take place 12-1 pm\, and tea/coffee will be provided. We have booked the room until 2 pm and would like to invite everyone who is available to bring their lunch and stay for an informal get together from 1-2 pm. \nThe aims of the first Forum are to: \n\nintroduce the purpose of the Forum\nprovide an opportunity for members to meet one another\nshare experiences of designing and delivering research methods focused teaching\nidentify six key challenges/topics to form the themes for the next year’s events\nset dates for upcoming sessions\n\nPlease sign up using the Eventbrite link. This multi-disciplinary conference is for both lecturers and researchers at the University\, and colleagues from external organisations\, who would like to: \n\nfind out more about how the University is working with external organisations on collaborative: research projects\, teaching activities\, employability initiatives\, and practice projects; and/or\n\n\nbe involved in identifying opportunities for building further links and developing future collaborations.\n\n  \nAs part of the event\, delegates will be invited to apply for seedcorn funding to generate future collaborative projects. SUMMARY:An Unmasterclass with Anne Boyer
DESCRIPTION:The Roland Barthes Reading group extends to host a more public event\, which one might call a symposium or a convivium\, but perhaps it is closer to a masterclass\, albeit one without mastery (or a class unmastered). We seek to avoid a keynote speaker\, but invite one nonetheless\, ANNE BOYER\, and the more hierarchical structure of a conference\, instead developing something that arises in or from the situation of encounter. This will be an event of readings\, rehearsed or impromptu\, formed in advance in response to a text (Roland Barthes\, of course\, wherever we have reached in our reading of The Preparation of the Novel)\, in response to our guest\, her work\, other guests\, their work\, our work\, and in response to the place of reading. If following the model of ancient Greece\, one may think of works (which some might call literary) taking place in the scene of reading\, central to its pleasure. \n

SUMMARY:'Migration\, Refuge and the University Group' sponsored activity
DESCRIPTION:As part of the EU CultureLabs research project\, a local team of researchers at SHU are organising a workshop held on the 22nd of May at the City Campus of Sheffield Hallam University.  \nCultureLabs is a European project funded under Horizon2020 (2018-2021). Working collaboratively across six countries\, it aims to support Cultural Heritage Institutions\, Non-Governmental Organisations\, public administrations and other actors who wish to organise participatory projects aiming at social inclusion via interaction with cultural heritage.  \nAs migrant communities are a primary focus of the project\, we are seeking individuals based in Sheffield who have experience in tackling issues with migration and migrant communities.  \nThe workshop will focus on gathering professional feedback on four participatory projects that the project is working on and that are aimed at achieving social innovation through cultural heritage-based activities. People that are subscribed to this mailing list are therefore invited to participate in our co-creation activities (which will include presentations from the projects organisers as well as role-playing activities) taking place on the morning of the 22nd of May from 9:30 AM to 1 PM to provide their comments and feedback\, and also to learn more about the project and meet our team. \nTravel costs will be covered by the project organiser. Participants will also be invited to join the CultureLabs team for lunch at the Ambulo restaurant\, located inside the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield. Selected participants in the workshop will be rewarded with a £20 voucher for their time. \nAs places are limited\, the workshop organisers will select the participants based on their background and expertise. DESCRIPTION:We’d like to invite you to the first meeting of the Hallam Guild Group on PGR Wellbeing. \nIt is widely acknowledged that postgraduate research (PGR) study presents a number of risk factors for students’ mental health and wellbeing – expectations of high academic achievement and imposter syndrome; the intensity of and dependence on the student-supervisor relationship; individualised study and feelings of isolation; the normalisation of stress and PGR study; and a perception that core University services are ‘not for PGRs’. DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \nThe first meeting of the Hallam Guild Group – Compassion in Higher Education will be an opportunity to meet colleagues with an interest in this area from across the university\, and will also include Guest Speaker Theo Gilbert\, University of Hertfordshire (click here for Speaker Bio) \n‘Embedding and assessing the micro skills of compassion in student group work’ \nThis workshop will offer you fascinating background insights into what is happening in the science of compassion these days and why it has become a ‘must-watch’ space for educators everywhere. The workshop will explain some very practical\, compassionate micro skills for students (and staff) to bring to their group work/team work – in ways they may not have thought of before. Compassion can be defined as: noticing\, not normalising\, distress or disadvantaging of yourself or others – and doing something about it. We will have a chance to try some of these micro skills out together. We’ll see how quick and easy they are to teach\, support and assess. Professor McHanwell will also refer to his recent publication Guiding principles for teaching promotions (2018) co-authored with Professor Sue Robson\, which proposes a set of principles for the reward and recognition of teaching to inform institutions. \nSteve McHanwell is Professor of Anatomical Sciences in Dental Sciences at Newcastle University. Teaching since 1976\, he has extensive experience in teaching Anatomy to medical\, dental\, speech sciences and science students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. \nHe has a major role in developing the teaching and learning agenda of Newcastle University and has taken up mentoring and leadership roles institutionally\, nationally and internationally to support both junior and more senior colleagues to develop their own teaching and to advance the pedagogy of his subject. \nHe has been Education Officer of the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland  and Secretary General to the Trans European Pedagogic Anatomy Research Group of the European Federation of Experimental Morphologists. \nAt the launch event\, we will discuss the proposed programme of activities\, objectives and outputs\, to ensure that these meet the needs of existing and aspiring PFHEAs in raising the profile of Teaching and Learning at Hallam.

DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to the Un-Launch event for the Hallam Guild Group ‘EthicsIR’.  This group aims to increase awareness and understanding of the ethical principles involved in designing and conducting institutional research/evaluation at Hallam\, especially work with students.  Institutional research (IR) is “evidence driven approaches to decision making within organisations. Effective IR requires strategically relevant sources of reliable data which are embedded within the organisation. IR therefore includes research or evaluation conducted by staff or students on their own organisation” (Austen 2018).  In our context this includes the generation of student data\, institutional surveys\, pedagogic research and educational research/evaluation concerning student experiences in HE (e.g. Hallam Guild Projects).  This group is co-led by three institutional researchers at Hallam: Liz Austen (STEER)\, Stella Jones-Devitt (STEER) and Liz Chitwood (Students Union). \nWe hope to create a collaborative group of staff and students who are interesting in exploring and responding to ethical dilemmas in our everyday institutional research practices in a supportive and appreciative environment.  This Group will develop in response to the thoughts and ideas of its members.  This first open meeting (Un-Launch) is an opportunity to find out more about the scope of the Group and plans for the programme of work.  During the event you will also consider ethical dilemmas in institutional research\, and are encouraged to bring your own! \nThis Group is hopefully of interest to all staff (academic and professional services) and students who are engaged in research.  Please spread the word and let your friends and colleagues know!
